      Peony:

Annotation is useful if your child is like mine - she reads too fast.

Annotation forces her to slow down. The notes she scribbles at each para helps her to zoom in on the answers quicky once she gets down to answering the qn.

Her school emphasises on annotations a lot - kids are made to stand if they do not do annotations.

Now it has become 2nd nature to her.

My DS reads fast too and he tends not to refer back to the passage after reading 2 times and answers questions based on his memory. Since we went through some comprehension using annotation after reading tips from this forum, he has been using annotation and manages to score decent marks in his compre and swear by it now.

We all have psle2011mum to thank! Oh bless her soul... bless her soul!!

Annotation is very time consuming. My son had to do it during recent sa1. He didn’t have time to finish the comprehension OE as a result. Those who didn’t do that were punished.

My DS does not do full annotation as what psle2011mum showed us. He somehow derives his own annotation, ie. Making notes along the way that he deem important. I would think that this needs a few practices so that he is comfortable with his own way of doing the annotation. The notes he makes help him to trace & link back the answers more efficently.

My suggestion is to let your DS have a few practices and he should be able to figure out what notes to make to make him link back the answers more quickly and accurately.

I taught my pupils annotation as well because I notice they are too ‘fast’ for their own good. Most of them are able to finish the English Paper 2 rather fast because they don’t even bother to read the passage to understand but rather just skim and straight away answer. Very similar way to the way they read books nowadays - skim, get the general idea rather than read slowly and understand the meaning between lines.

I also ‘forced’ them to annotate…those who did I reward so now it became second nature for them to do it and once they found out how useful it is, they do it even when I have stopped the reward system. I also told them when they annotate, they do not need to write in full sentences but rather point form or even incomplete sentences will do. What matters most is those notes help them to understand the passage and slow them down in their reading.

As for writing, my pupils did get back their marks for all the components (although they are only allowed to look at their oral marks and read the comments made by the examiners in school and not bring them home). As for writing, they are able to bring back the marked papers with the final marks. Of course for some of them, I also think they should be able to get higher marks but then I consoled the parents by telling them that’s the way it is during PSLE - if they are ‘unlucky’ and got a strict marker, there is no way we can go to MOE to request for change of mark. So they have to learn to accept the mark as it is.

I am not looking at the annotation part yet...in the meantime, I am planning to time him first. He needs to get the idea of time constraint into his head first.

We \"customised\" what our child needs most by targetting at the weaker areas that we have identified ourselves. This June holidays is crucial and everyone is going full steam !

Jia you, everyone ! :nunchuk: :stompfeet:

Our family is off for an early vacation nxt 4 days. Thot it wd b grt to just completely relax, have time to soak in pool, laugh & do silly things before getting back to Psle mugging. DS is sooo thrilled abt this & I hope this will also b part of his memory of his Psle year. We worked hard but we also took time to bond as a family & have fun.
