Chenonceau:
Yes, he will be in P6 next year. Think different schools do things differently. My nephew's school has position ranking but not my son's school.Annamom ... kekekekeke... yeah, one needs the scores of all the students who took the exam to calculate SD and the average. Your school gives these figures? Lucky you!!
Is your child in P5? Mine is in P5. No one gave us these numbers leh...
I use the information to gauge if my son is above or below average among his peers as well as get an idea if the paper was tough or simple.

annamom:
Sorry all information was given to me . guess I shouldn't say \"you need to work them out first\", you need to be given the figures.
How do you get SD?8228:
Hi Essential
Think Chenoceau has helped with the link.
From my understanding, T score requires a few components namely :-
(i) National average mark - N
(ii) Your child's mark - YS
(iii) standard deviation - SD
The formula is 50 + [(10*(YS-N)]/SD for individual subjects.
Different subject has different N and different SD. you need to work them out first.
sum up the 4 subjects' individual T score you get the Total T score for 4subjects.
Eg
I have just worked out my son's T score for chinese.
His score was 54.5
His school average was 69.2
SD 13.5
= 50 + [10*(54.5-69.2)]/13.5
= 39.11
50 is the average and if your child gets marks lower than national level, he gets lower T score than 50. If he gets marks higher than national level, he gets higher T score than 50.
PS. If what I wrote is incorrect, please assist in explanation so I will have a better understanding too
These figures were given in the report book. (The school has to work out these figures.)
:thankyou: -
What is the difference between mean scores and median scores? Which one is the school’s average??
-
hi cokepower,
I agree with others.. do revision with your dd this holiday.. for math, needs alot of practise and help her understand the concept and application. To be frank, their math questions are so tough that i also can't answer!! LOL! So I have also started 'studying' again.. I boutgh the OnSponge maths book.. I will read to understand and hope to do revision with my girls.. Agree to have tuition at least twice a week if you do not have much time to coach..
I believe your encourgement & support will certainly help your dd
Certainly understand your stress cos dd is also taking PSLE next year.. and i'm glad to have blessings from my boss that I can switch to part time work next year!! :rahrah:
Don't give up!! All the best to our kids for 2012 PSLE!

The median of a finite list of numbers can be found by arranging all the observations from lowest value to highest value and picking the middle one. If there is an even number of observations, then there is no single middle value; the median is then usually defined to be the mean of the two middle values
Mean = average. -

Ok! I will look out for it!Chenonceau, should have, we get two such statistics a year (mid and final). I asked the teachers before - it is a standard MOE cockpit programme written to churn out the statistics as described by Pen88n.
However, I feel the comparison is still limited as it is based on a school cohort unlike PSLE which is national-wide. -
My son’s report book only shows the mean but not the standard deviation. Anyway the mean for Maths is 42. Surely the national average can’t be this low. So concluded that the school average may not be as useful in getting good estimate of t-score.

I have a set of triplet, 2 girls and 1 boy will be in P6 next years. Each has their own weak and good area. My boy weakest is Chinese and he hate it. My older girl is English, somehow she always lost marks in Oral, a quite person. My younger girl is weak in Math.
I wander 2012, which subject will be the hardest.
I also notice that this yr my older girl sored 5 marks more in total than my younger girl, but when I caculate the T-sore (from same school), actually my younger got 1 mark more than my older girl. -
