2012 PSLE Discussions and Strategy

My parents are also busy helping me especially this year...we will go over for meals and then back home to get revision done/tuition. It's really like a whole village getting my son thru psle :faint:
That is why it takes a village to educate a child :-).janet_lee88:
I feel that SUPPLEMENTARY lessons should not be teaching from syllabus but doing worksheets prepared by HODs/P6 teachers. Shouldn't this be the case ? :scratchhead:
Teachers are NOT teaching students how to answer questions for comprehension OE or cloze for eg...most schools just throw the worksheets to the kids. The exam papers of some schools are so 'impressive' with difficult compre passages beyond P6 standard. But are the kids taught how to handle ? No, the exam papers is to show other parents that the school standard is high. PERIOD. -
Wouldn't it be great if schools prepares our kids well in advance for PSLE (starting at P5)...and the other thing - giving our kids motivational talks to be self-motivated ??? That would be simply great !!! :imcool:
I salute the principal if he/she can do that. After all, that's the reason why our kids go to school right ? Not to attend school to listen to teachers delivering lessons and not teaching the know-how...leaving this big responsibility to US.
Learning should be fun. But parents are struggling to teach kids how to handle comprehension open-ended. Then have to search for tutors to coach our kids in math. -

All of them got 260? If so, then it's really impressive! My son told me teaching will officially start on Thur. He has yet to meet his EL and CL teachers...only know his FT will teach math and science.
His FT told the class that the p6 class under him last year scored 260 and above. :yikes: well, let's wait and see.
Although teaching/homework supposed to start from thur, FT has completed the topic on algebra already
don't know if my son is worried to hear that, bcos I can anticipate teachers will go at breakneck speed.
My DS learned Algebra yesterday but not sure if it's completed. Need to check with him today when he is back. Your DS's FT super fast leh, go like bullet train.

Janet, have you bought the PSLE past year (2007 to 2011)exam booklet? I think this is a \"Must\" buy especially for Science & Math. Think all school will get their PSLE students to purchase. We just bought ours.

Do you all find it kinda confusing to have 3 threads all on 2012 PSLE?

And this one...
Think we should get mods to merge? -
My DS hasn’t even started former lessons as of yesterday!! It’s still happy hour settling down time.

Hi Janet,
Hi Daisy,janet_lee88:
He loves to play computer and watch TV and I've told or more like scolded him to \"wake up\" umpteen times. :nunchuk: :nunchuk:
There is really no need to apologize...I am facing the same headache as you too. My son loves to watch Youtube, all nuts about that animal kaiser thing and Wii. I've nagged, scolded and talked to him nicely that PSLE is ONLY 9 months away. So what, after 1 day automatic doing some work, he is back to square 1 the day after. I'm stressed out :frustrated: over his lack of worry and concern...already losing sleep every night worrying what to expect next year and he doesn't seem to bother at all
Math tutor was so angry last week because he was dreaming and forgot his P4 Math. I really feel like strangling him.
I think we are stressed out maybe because we're handling boys and they are like that. They will listen to you seriously and nod their head to whatever we tell them. This will work for 1 or 2 days then it will get dried out. Then we got to start with our nagging again  . Another 9 more months and school is going to start next week. Have to go into a real serious business by setting strict rules. :rotflmao: Sometimes strict rules also don't work for them. Just keep fingers crossed. :xedfingers:
Sounds very fimilar!!
I nag at my DS until I also find myself super naggy and a pain! :scared: -
I agree with Chenonceau - the consolidation would benefit everyone greatly.
janet_lee88 - DD’s school did not have motivational talks as such but did have something which was supposed to teach the kids "exam strategies’. They did this quite late in the day in P6 but it would have been wonderful if the school had instilled these habits/routine from P5 on.
These included how much time for a question, how to do effective checking, what to do when you are stuck, best practices like never leave a question blank… all the more important when fear strikes during the exams and the kids don’t think that straight, so having a 'habit/routine" to fall back on helps.
I just realised that I forgot to post something on the Situational Writing part of the English Compo paper - will get down to it soon. This should be a full mark section for almost all the kids really.
Also another random thought – my DD was a serial correction tape user - she had withdrawal symptoms when I tried to get her to "correct neatly" by cancelling. MOE’s stance is not to prohibit correction tape use during the PSLE, but they do discourage it and there is a good reason for this – the ink seeps through a lot of the correction tapes in the market so that after some time, you see the "old" words through the tape with the "new" words on the top. It’s not easy for the marker to read the answers when this happes and you really don’t want to make the marker’s job harder. We did our own experiments on the tapes and pens we used on paper and checked after various periods of time eg one week , two weeks etc to see how many layers of tape we had to apply and how long before the ink seeped through; we then comparend this time period with that between the paper and the PSLE marking days. I’m really sorry I can’t remember the final results of our experiment but as it also depends on the pen/ink you child will use, you should try it out.
Will be back with that English Situational Writing Post soon. -
Hmmm…psle2011mum, I agree that the kids seem to use correction tape alot. Are they allow to use those friction pens whereby they can erase their mistakes?? A thought that just popped up after reading your post.

Hi Tankee,
Thanks for moving the P6 2012 discussion to one thread...otherwise it will be repetition.
My son's FT completed algebra within 2 days. Homework should start to come in today. No time to waste and perhaps the 2 days of CNY is the ONLY other break for P6s. March, June and Sep are PSLE intensive preparation periods :frustrated:
Mummies, can you advise what other 'carrots' to motivate the kids pls ?
I only have 2 in my mind:
*Mcdonald Frappe
*His favourite Aston western
