Thanks for reproducing the qn. Reading the qn I do not think should include 1 group of 12 becos of it’s stated "equal groups".

oh this question has been discussed before already? -
This is not a maths question. It’s a question on statutory interpretation. I seriously doubt that the person who set the question even thought about how the words he/she chose could be interpreted in different ways. The question merely asks "How many other ways can she arrange the cards." In the context of a maths question about factors, the plural includes the singular. As a maths question, it fails to achieve its objective if it omits 1x12. Worse, it could be positively misleading on the correct mathematical concept.
I hate this kind of problems because sometimes the child can be penalised, not because the child is wrong, but because the teacher/examiner is wrong.
A good maths question should be clear and unambiguous. If adults can argue about the interpretation of a question, what does one expect a child to do with it?
To take the ambiguity out of the question, the person who wrote the question should have included one group of 12 as an additional example. In its current format, I would say that both answers are correct. -

Hi,
Anyone knows where to get this book "the essential parents’ guide to primary math "? -
Hi parents
need advise for division question:
12 divide by 6 = 2
if there are 12 objects, does the child group by circling 6 objects or 2 objects?
Should my explanation be : 12 objects shared among 6 friends and each friend gets 2 ?
or 12 objects shared by 2 friends and each friend gets 6?
Which is the correct explanation? -
Hi, with ref to ur ques:
12/6 or 12 divide by 6
It means for instance divide 12 sweets equally among 6 frenz;
How many sweets do each fren get?
So 12 divide by 6, u shud circle the sweets in 2s for each fren. There are no leftovers and each fren gets 2 sweets equally. 12 divide by 6 equals 2
U can illustrate using manipulatives; anything u can get in hand like colour pencils. I hope this is helpful.
