Aside from the above question, Poppet still has several questions which I merged into this thread:

Hi there,

Anyone can help me on following 5 very challenging questions, thanks in advance :boogie:

Qn 1. Mary had 350 more trading cards than John. After each of them received 50 trading cards from their cousin, Mary had three times as many trading cards as John. How many trading cards did John have at first?

Qn 2. Wendy bought an equal number of apples and oranges for a party. The apples were sold at 4 for $3 and the oranges were sold at 3 for $2. She paid $5 more for the apples. How many fruits did she buy altogether?
Every 12 apples --> $9
Every 12 oranges --> $8
$9-$8= $1
For every packet of 12 apples and 12 oranges, Wendy paid $1 more for the apples.

Number of packets (of 12 apples and 12 oranges) = $5/$1 = 5

Total number of fruits bought = 5 x 12 x 2 = 120 (60 oranges and 60 apples)

cheers.

Qn 3. Bala opened up a book and added the page numbers of the two facing pages. He found the answer to be 119. He then decided to multiply the page numbers of these two pages. What is the product of the two page numbers?
http://i47.tinypic.com/rk6cev.png\">

119-1 = 118
118/2 = 59
The two pages are 59 and 60
59 x 60 = 3540

cheers.

Qn 4. Ali had $190 more than Baba at first. After Baba had spent $50, Ali had 4 times as much money as Baba had left. How much did Ali have at first?
http://i47.tinypic.com/242ajq1.png\">

After Baba spent $50,
Ali would have ($190 + $50) = $240 more than Baba

$240/3 = $80
Ali's money --> $80 x 4 = $ 320

cheers.

Qn 5. Charlie and Mr Brown had the same number of buttons. If Charlie gives 500 buttons to Mr Brown, Mr Brown would have 6 times as many buttons as Charlie. How many buttons did Charlie have at first?
http://i49.tinypic.com/ipcu1y.png\">

After giving 500 buttons to Mr Brown, Charlie would have 500x 2 = 1000 less buttons than Mr Brown.

Charlie's buttons left = 1000/5 = 200
Charlies's buttons at first = 200 + 500 = 700

cheers.

Appreciate if anyone can help me in the following two questions. :?

Qn1. Amos and Lynn have 120 pears altogether. After Amos gave 17 pears to Lynn, they each have the same number of pears.
(a) How many pears do they each have at the end?
120 / 2 = 60
(b) How many pears does Amos have at first?
In the end, Amos has 60 pears after giving away 17 pears.
Therefore, at first, Amos has (60 + 17) = 77 pears.

Is this really a P4 question :?
