Need help to solve some math questions.

Q1). 5/7 of Mike’s money is equal to 2/3 of Rachel’s money. Rachel has $1600 more than Mike. If Mike spends 5/8 of his money, how much money will he have left?

Q2). Sue has some money. She spends $100 on 3 identical bags and 7 identical belts. If she wants to buy another bag, she will be short of $4. However, if she buys 1 more belt, she will have $6 left. How much money does Sue has?

Q3). Paul baked some tarts. He sold 2/5 of them in the morning and 2/7 of the remainder in the afternoon. he sold 472 more tarts in the morning than in the afternoon. If each tart was sold for $0.87, how much did Paul collect from the sales? Give your answer to the nearest dollars.

        Thanks!

          Hi

          Q1.
          5/7 of mike’s money = 2/3 of rachel’s money
          --> 10/14 of mike’s money = 10/15 of rachel’s money
          So, mike's money to rachel’s money = 14u : 15u

          1u = $1600, mike’s money left = 3/8 x 14 x $1600 = $8400

          cheers.

            Hi

            1 bag = [money left] + $4
            1 belt = [money left] - $6
            1 bag cost $ 10 more than a belt.

            3 bags + 7 belts = 10 belts + $30 = $100, 10 belts = $70, 1 belt = $7
            Sue’s money left = $ 7 + $6 = $ 13

            cheers.

              Hi

Total number of tarts = 35u
              Sold 2/5 in morning= 2/5 x 35u = 14u
              Sold 2/7 of remainder in afternoon = 2/7 x (35u - 14u) = 6u
              So, 14u -6u = 8u = 472, 1u = 59

              Total sold = 14u + 6u = 20u = 20 x 59 = 1180

              Total amount collected from sales = 1180 x $0.87 = $ 1026.60 = $1027 (to nearest dollar)

              cheers.

Can somebody please help with this question?

There are 85 plates of fried noodles for 80 people. Each adult eats 2 plates of fried noodles and every 3 children share 1 plate of fried noodles. How many adults and how many children are there? (Ans given is: 35 adults and 45 children)

Is there an alternate method to Guess and Check? G&C in an exam takes too long.

                      Thank you.

                        Hi

You may use a strategy called “Make a Supposition”.

This question is similar to the familiar ‘Counting heads and legs” type but given a slight tweak.

                        Suppose there were 80 adults.

                        80*2 ------ 160

Now increase a group of 3 children, hence you’ll have 77 adults to make a total of 80 people.

                        (77*2) + 1 ------ 155.

For every increase of 3 children, we see a reduction of 5 plates of fried noodles (160 - 155)

                        160 – 85 ------ 75

                        75/5 ----- 15

For a reduction of 75 plates, you have to reduce the number of children by 15 groups of 3.

                        Hence (15*3) or 45 chilldren.

                        80 - 45 ------ 35 (adults)

                        Best wishes
