L & M & N shared the cost of a present. L paid 1/4 of the total share of M&N. M paid 1/9 of the total share of L&N. N paid $60 more than M. What is the cost of the present? Many thanks to anyone who can help

Hi,

L : M + N
1 : 4 (total 5)
2 : 8 (total 10, total unchanged)

M : L + N
1 : 9 (total 10)

So,
L : M : N
2 : 1 : 7 (total 10, total unchanged)
2U : U : 7U

N-M -->7U – U --> 6U -->60
U -->10

Cost -->10U--> $100

Mr Chua has a class of less than 40 pupils. He gave all the pupils in his class some jellybeans. If he gave 5 jellybeans to each pupil, he would have 2 jellybeans left. If he gave 4 jellybeans to each pupil, he would have 38 jellybeans left.

(a) How many pupils were there in his class?
(b) How many jellybeans did Mr Chua have?
