I think I did not say all of them pay their own accommodation, many of them do, and they share - many maids in one apartment to split cost, widely reported, justifying the \"higher\" pay they get there. HK's apartments are mostly very small, how to accommodate a maid ? even if they do live-in, they become 'master of the hall'......
all these maids want to go because they think the living environment is like singapore - tell them oso they won't believe you
I had a maid worked for me for 5 years - then wanted to go HK, after one month, called and said want to return - how to ? already got replacement maid -
middle income families, unfortunately, do live in very small flats (most cant even afford to buy private flats). but as both need to work, die die must get maid to look after kids especially during the school holidays (july - aug) and the many half terms…
so either the employers rent a room for maid to stay elsewhere or the maids pooled together the $$$ (employers usually pay an agreement portion while the maids come up with the rest themselves) and get an apartment to share.
i am unsure if this is allow in hk but the govt probably closed both eyes because the housing issue in hk is really really really bad and the govt knows it very well. -
Too many maids think that the grass is always greener outside. My neighbour’s maid left because she thought working for expat would be better. She had higher salary and also get to live on her own outside (expat rent a room for her). But she often comes back to visit her old employer. I heard that recently, she was sent home because she quarrel with the expat wife. Then one of my friend’s also changed to work for a Japanese expat family because she wanted higher salary. In the end, she couldn’t stand eating sushi everyday, and had to be transferred again!

Yah… every type of people/races will have a share of good and bad people.
Some maids think working for expat can get high pay, more off days, not all are rosy.
I have shared this before that one of my ex-maid who worked for an expat (British) had to share fridge with a dog. Another expat (Indian) can only eat left over and if no left over, eat instantly noodle. Another (American), the maid has to work from 7 am till 11pm bcos party almost every night, must clean up after 11pm. -
Salary is not the main issue for some maids. Culture difference can also make an impact. If the maid doesn’t like raw food then its pretty hard to survive.

Verykaisu, that’s true. Sometimes we try to explain the pros and cons to the maid they think we are trying to discourage them from going overseas. Now if all the maids chipped in to rent a house, the house will probably be a small one. So it will still be quite a squeeze isn’t it? When you work in Singapore, you even get to have a maid’s room. Isn’t that better? You even get to stay in it for free. But I must say these days some of the maid’s room doesn’t even have window. The developer must be thinking that maids just live on water and food.

hah, all these foreigners who are fighting for this and that for the maids have a persistent and unwavering notion that we locals are slave drivers who treat maids like dog just because of a few bad apples. but they are no angels themselves
i am not surprised by the many complaints made by these foreigners about their maids (be it forums here, uk or hk to name a few). same problems like ours (bad attitude, always on hp, sloppy work, etc). some of the crimes committed by foreigner employers are worse like rape, physical abuse (burning, disfigured), withholding of salary or deliberate deduction of salary for "unaccounted for" expenses. -
sometimes if need to have just a bunk bed for accommodation might be better than living under the same roof as the employers.

On one hand, I think it is only human to provide day off for the maids. On the other hand, there is a concern that the maids will meet ‘bad’ friends and learn all the ‘bad’ habits or tricks.
