It seems the bulk of P6 maths is ratio, percentage, fractions (of course whole numbers) using algebra.

Yes, it's an extension of P5 work, with a little more thinking and questions are phrased a little more complex. The trick is not to be restricted to 1 method. Even if the question is phrased with lots of percentage, it could be easier to solve with ratio or fraction. For this, the child has to be able to see the relationship among the topics.Lizawa

Sorry, I don't know any good Maths tutor. I coach my children myself. I use the Andrew Er Challenging problems book. Based on experience, if your child can complete the problem sums in there with no problems, then, should not have problem for Maths.
BTW, there is going to be a change in the Maths syllabus. Starting next year, PSLE Maths will have 2 papers. 1 with calculator and 1 without calculator. -

My girl P5 this yr, already have 2 papers one with calculator and one without at SA1. The format is same as PSLE.
From this thread, I see a lot of parents know how to solve the problems. I can only explain after seeing the answers, but not all questions.
My girl is only average student. She can’t answer all 3 to 5 marks questions. So I thought of getting one tutor to reinforce the requirements of PSLE. -

What's the main difference between the 2 papers, besides the calculator part ? I haven't got a chance to study the new syllabus yet. My younger one in P4 this year, so next year will be following this new syllabus.
I thought that if there is a change in syllabus, maybe there will be a slight shift of emphasis from the current \"Part C - 50 marks 3 - 5 marks questions\". The 4 - 5 marks questions are not easy to solve for many children.
Since the syllabus has changed, better make sure the new tutor know the new requirements. -

You mean your P6 boy did not use calculator in his exams? How many papers did he have?
The "change of Maths syallabus" is only the use of calculator and the no. of questions for paper 2. I did not count the no. of questions in paper 2 but the sch has slowly increase the no. of questions from P4. P5 is same as PSLE.
I have read in this thread that speed would not be included (I would regard this as true meaning of syllabus change). But I don’t think it would be excluded. There is no official news on this.
Yesterday I have requested for a tutor from an agency. The tutor I selected has taught 5 P6 students this yr. I have yet to receive confirmation.
Thank you for your advise on doing exercises on Andrew Le challenging books. In fact, I have bought one earlier this yr but have not attempted any of the questions. I saw there are many steps. For those who are weak in maths have phobia before attempting. One can easily lose track of the many steps. -

No, he did not have to use the calculator. His is still the old syllabus. So 1 paper, 2hr 15 min. So your daughter will be the first batch to do the new syllabus Maths paper. Hope it's not going to be too difficult for the 1st batch.Lizawa

No wonder someone said it is a test of stamina.
Last yr P4, in one paper, some students couldn’t finish. I even told my girl to start doing the 2nd part first. But her classmate’s mother told me tuition teacher said better to do 1st part first as human brain works from easy to difficult - train / gear the brain towards 2nd part.
Next yr, split into 2 papers, I believe it is on same day, different time. -

The topic rate is removed this year and speed will be removed next year.
For Paper 1 ~ 50min for 15MCQ and 15 short questions.
For Paper 2 ~ 1h 40min for 5 ‘short’ and 13 ‘long’ questions.
I think the time for paper 1 is a bit short. Or maybe my kid is tooo slowly, he has sufficient time for paper 2.
How do you use Andrew Er’s book to teach? By doing the sums?
Is it a guide book?
Is there any guide book for parents to read?

I was recommended Maths practice books by Li Fanglan but am curious about Andrew Er books. Has anyone compared them?
