Hi Buds,
Thanks for your kind words and encouragement!
He did the same thing daily in the past that became drilling and no fun at all. Thanks for your tips, i schedule it as what you suggested, it works better.
Sometimes, he can sit through with me for 1/2 hour to finish up his assessments (different set at one go, sometimes, i got to break them in few sessions)
He is currently learning phonics in MMI, is one to one , not fun at all. I am considering to stop it as the method of teaching is like how i taught my son previously. He cried and kept telling me that he didnβt want to go to Montessori, no doubt the teachers are nice.
This is more suitable for kids who have longer concentration span.
The approach doesnβt work for my son. I sit with my son, i know how the lesson being taught. Is really drilling.
I personally find that phonics does help a lot in pronounciation and reading but i would like to give it a break. He doesnβt seem ready. I would continue to teach him reading with whole word method. Let him learn phonics in school. He has begun to like reading P&J.
I would like to spend more time with him on arts and craft.
Lu,
I have a younger daughter age 17 months old. She learns fast and think will be a lot easier.
I expose her to weekly chinese classics with my son in temple. -
Phonics is but only one of the methods to teaching reading, Charmaine.
And for one-to-one your son should actually be able to go faster and not
having to conform to the norms and the curriculum nature. He should come
one to one with me! :hugs: And he'd be reading in no time at all. Hehee!
You don't have to press on hard with him reading alone. Diversify the
content of time you have with him to do various other stuff that CAN
lead to reading. I am happy that the suggestions to segregate his
timetable helped you. And i am sure he is happier too... spending
all that quality time with you.
Introduce other books that appeal to him for children his age other than
Peter and Jane to expand his reading material and to expose him to the
wonderful world of books out there. Go for library trips together. Join in
their story telling sessions. Do puppet play during story telling. Make
reading come alive.
I didn't learn reading via Phonics either. And i have my mumsie to thank
and can never thank her enough for never ever denying me reading when
ever i felt like it. And she's not even English educated.. i'm truly blessed...
If you haven't already read my sharings on how i started reading, you
may catch up here @ this link... > http://www.kiasuparents.com/kiasu/content/how-i-started-reading
Charmaine... i am VERY happy for you. :hugs:
You brought your child back to fun learning.. and on the right track now.
I do sincerely hope it is less stressful for you now, what with work & also
with the care of your young daughter. I hope you inspire other parents
with your sharings of the efforts you have went through to help your son
learn best... even when the goings were rough on you at first, the rough
got you going. I :salute: your relentless efforts to be the more confident
mom you are now.
I love hearing from you every time..

Yesterday I was able to visit the PCF Spice at Serangoon North Avenue 1 for my son whose entering Nursery.
I was very impressed with the environment, it was so colorful with a lot of decorations on the walls and ceiling to entice the kids and motivate them
It look so new , fresh and clean and I have observed their toilets and it was clean too. So far so good
I may not have a high standards than others but over-all-- the materials, the surroundings and the entire school aura is very good. It's quite big actually.
When I spoke to the nursery teacher, she's very warm, patient and she discussed to me in details. I like her personality! I am asking her about situations wherein what if the child misbehaves how does she handle? What if they are fighting? How do they discipline kids when at school? What if the child throws tantrum? How do you handle kids who cannot cope with the lessons really well? Do you spend time teaching him more?
She was able to answer me in a nice way and though it was quite general i was able to pick up some pointers too on how to react when my kid misbehaves.
I should say I just wanted to gauge how 'strict' they are in enforcing discipline to children and to those who have behavioural problems. I am sure that my questions have something to do with how I want my kids to be disciplined when they are in school. Seems like our conversation was fine with me, nothing to be alarmed about.
As for the worksheets, it looks the same with my K1. My K1 was a mixture of Montessori and the MOE too. Learning through play etc. Their worksheets are MOE Standards too. So I guess PCF is just as good as other schools around. So now, I want to transfer my K1 too
That's all for now. I just like SPICE!
Wow.... sounds like there are few good comments about PCF. There were rumours that PCF's standard is not well-prepared for Primary 1, after reading I am totally impressed. -

Hi Lu,
It is quite easy. Just get a template to work on it. He do it with my instruction. -
Hi all

Thanks
