GEP 2012 - Screening & Selection
-
quote=\"Lock\"]My DS is from Rulang. He told me the weirdest news. A few of his classmates got the notification that they were not selected into GEP, then there are a few others who did not receive anything and his FT said that those who did not receive anything today are on waiting list :?
Anyone here has similar encounter?[/quote]
Hi Lock, can you confirm this with your DD 's FT tmr ? -
Lock:
I doubt very much the school will go counter to a MOE initiative. A responsible school will provide the right info n guidance so that the child's well being is preserved n also benefit the most out of it.
There will be a briefing in school on Mon, 6.30pm. I highly suspect the Sch is going to counter offer the selected students to stay on in Rulang. Will see what is the Sch offering before making a decision. -

Lock,
My son is also in Rulang, he got selected round 2 as well. Really don't know what to do now, I like Rulang, school is aggressive and push well to their pupils. But giving up this, is it a bit waste?
Hard to decide! Don't like him to face daily pressure under high demanding GEP. His incoming pressure will be my problem! I am kind of reluctant to place him there.
I don't understand why Rulang must counter offer these selected students. The school should give their blessing if they decided to enrol into the programme. Isn't the school not align with MOE intention?
Putting the elite together may not be a bad thing because they can be more competitive.
It really depend whether your kids like challenges or just want to remain smooth sailling without much competition, no challenges etc.
At the end of the day, give your kid a neutral perspective of the programme and hear him/her view. -
One shOuld not equate elitism to academic achievement.
Elitism is a state of the mind. -

For some strange reason the teacher did not want to reveal the students who got selected in class so she said those words. But in the late afternoon, those who did not get the envelop got a call from the Sch to confirm being selected into GEP. So, there's actually no wait list. -
Assuming tat one gets in GEP n cannot cope n op out. Can still stay in the same school?
-
From what I know from teacher-friends, the Sch will hv to write a very detailed report on why the kid can’t cope in GEP if the kid wants to go back mainstream. Most of the the time, tr will just try to ‘MOULD’ n push the kids to make sure they ‘cope’ in GEP, regardless of anything else. It’s unthinkable to hv GEP to go back to mainstream as that wld means that the selection test is unreliable and/or the prog is flawed.
Hence, parents, the advice from all the primary Sch teachers I know (erm… I do know quite a number of them as I was an ex sec Sch tr myself) is that if your kid is hothoused into GEP or relies on tuition heavily to go to GEP, then it will be best to reconsider the option of going to GEP. As according to a friend from GEP branch, the selection test will not go wrong but it can’t differentiate those naturally gifted from those hothoused gifted. But it has shown that those who hothoused into GEP usually start to fall apart within 5 mths into the prog and they continue to be under tremendous stress n remain v unhappy for 3 yrs till graduation.
So, do think carefully. -
Plus, do consider the emotional n self esteem issues if your kid has to go back to mainstream. It’s impossible to shut all gossipmongers’ n rumourmongers’s mouth. This can be more damaging than hvg the kids struggle in GEP.
That’s why I am thinking v hard before making a decision and I’ve asked my DS to think v hard too. I lay out all the obstacles he will face, the fun he will have and the things he will miss from his old Sch in front of him and ask him to seriously think if he wants to go GEP. For me, once in and that’s it. There will be no option to opt out. -

They can, I believe. But I heard of one case whereby the parent transferred the child to another school. -
Good morning! Today should have more good news from those awaiting for results.
Good luck to all!
