100% students take higher chinese? just recently read somewhere and now concerned if what if kid in SAP sch cannot cope with higher chinese, then will they be treated as/streamed to 'lower class'. :scared:
Students are expected to take HCL in SAP secondary schools. Only in exceptional circumstances do some SAP schools allow the students to drop to CL in later years after trying out HCL. Some schools also have a minimum requirement for clearing HCL at a minimum grade for promotion purposes. So yes, they take HCL seriously in SAP schools.

        thanks.
what is the advantage of taking HCL in SAP sch vs non-SAP sch? better resources/environment in SAP sch to nurture the interest? (eg better immersion into the chinese culture?)

what is your view of going SAP sch? my boy's sch Principal said that HCL is better suited for students who are really and preferably naturally well-versed/strong interest in chinese. those who are already on tuition/enrichment of chinese in pri sch are not advised to opt for HCL in upper primary becoz if the kid do well enough, HCL is still available option in sec sch. (she said some students have 2x tutors for CL just to cope with HCL, which she discourages) but with the lack of HCL training in upper primary, will it affect the learning of HCL in sec sch as the foundation is already not as good as those taking HCL? will a regular student be able to cope with HCL in sec sch without tuition or do most students who do HCL in sec sch rely on additional help? TQ 🙂

hi Jedamum, my dd’s in a SAP sch. They have 9 periods of HCL a week. The standard is super high and the teachers’ expectations are also very high. But I still like her to be in SAP sch, the culture is very different from non-sap sch. For HCL in non-sap sch vs HCL in sap sch, I believe the trs should also follow the syllabus since they use the same text, I’m not sure of the diff. Anyway, they still take the same exam.

i like SAP sch's idea (ie immersion in language learning), but son seems not keen. the combination that he looks forward to (mixed sch+dual track+non-sap) seems not available (or at least to my knowledge), so he has to compromise 1 criteria when it is time to choose; but first i already made known to him that he has to make the qualifying mark if he wants choices. 😓

Uh. Not true that lessons are carried out all in Chinese. Though almost everyone in these SAP schools are Chinese. Malays and Indians are non-existent, somehow.

Not true. There are people in Normal Chinese too. Their form class is the same as those taking HCL.

In my sch, u have to get an A* in Normal CL or Merit in HCL for PSLE before u can study HCL. But people can appeal, and if appeals succeed, the teachers will monitor their progress to see if they can continue to cope with HCL

                  Hi,

Which school has better management and maybe more dedicated teachers? I know every school will have a number of dedicated teachers but I would like to know if some schools have better management and thus more motivated teachers…my boy’s choice of schools is Dunman, Hwa Chong and Anderson (if he cannot get into the other 2), anyone has any input regarding the teachers in these schools?

My fren who recently went to HCI says he got a lot of homework. I often see him slogging into the wee hours of the night doing homework while FACEBOOKING. 😉

My friend went there! He got a MacBook Air for all his lessons at MSHS.

On this note, many kids here would want to go. -WAHAHAHAHAHA-

And parents probably won't allow them to spend $2000 to buy a MacBook Air 😉
