Is GEP really necessary?

That's why some pri schools continue to perform well generations after generations...a mix of good genes, good home support, rich school heritage which allows them to see beyond themselves, ample peer pressure....etc
Exactly, the world is unfair isn't it? That's why they have a long, long queue as well. Don't even need to offer 40 hours of service, they don't accept!
Sometimes, I think the rich will only get richer and the poor will always get poorer... unless... -
Puzz...zzle:
Hi My dd just had her GEP test yesterday. Any one know how soon the result will be out? 2nd round will be on 16th oct. Who marks the papers?
I think this is wrong thread to ask. There is prob another thread somewhere discussing this.

Or a dollar less for casinoThe education ministry already gets almost as much funding as defence, and more than any other ministry (except defence) by a mile. Finland all that great? How sustainable do you think their model will be? Has their education system translated into a competitive advantage. Would love to see any data on that.
People forget there is an opportunity cost to everything, a dollar more for education is a dollar less for healthcare, or community development, or transport, all already receiving significantly less money than schools.
:siam: and groom teachers instead of ... what do they call them in casinos?
and our workforce has one of the lowest productivity among the first world countries.
So you think it is not ok to have good teachers? What's your view? :? -

Red Herring.

As much as I hate the casinos, they are revenue generating, not a cost centre. -

Red Herring to you too! But education can be a revenue generating centre too! Check out the US and Australian education industries, where it is reaping big time, with scholars bringing in the $$$. And us? Funding the 2nd grade scholars (check out statistics of those who obtained our government scholarships on our tax money) from foreign countries... some of them don't even get 2nd upper... and to add that they deprive some of our local kids of the places...

Unfair? But that's life. While some r asking for these schools to open up, I thought it makes more sense to do more n raise the standard in the other schools. Of course they will not reach the same level as the 'heritage' schools, but we must not forget that those schools took generations to get to where they r now. It's a good thing that kids from neighbourhood schools r filling up the list of top psle scorer.Nebbermind:

Unfair? Martha got scolded for being too busy, the prodigal son was welcome back despite walking out of the family, the labourers who joined late got the same pay as those who came early...we may feel unfair of such treatments at some stage of our lives, but hopefully someday wisdom will come to us to show us why. -

Actually everywhere also got good and not so good teachers.
Thumb-up, like! I was thinking whether you will reply but you did and it is such a generous sharing. Thanks for taking your time to write. I am really enlighten by your sharing as I & my dd will have to decide by next year. I was just thinking whether is there a need to send her to sec sch with sbge but now I have a better understanding. For my dd's point of view (regarding GEP), the teachers do make a difference besides the programme. Umm... your comments regarding NJC's teachers do make me think harder.
NJC teachers are all pretty good only his science teacher a bit old pattern. But kids need to learn to adapt to all right? Cannot expect to have their way all the time. In life it is always about one's ability to adapt and compromise with the environment. Anyway, that is my philosophy.
My other son in SJI. Teachers there are good too even though he is not in the SBGE there. So does not mean only SBGE will have good teachers. Sec school not like primary school where you have a set of teachers for GE and a set for others. All mixed up la. Anyway even if got SBGE, I heard is up to sec 2 only. After that also no differentiation.
I think sometimes the pri school GE teachers psyco the children la, say only GE is good. I always try to undo that :rotflmao:
and tell my son he is no diff from others. Only maybe better at some things, but others also have their strength. Maybe becos I have GEP and non GEP kids so I try to be balance ??
I want the brothers to be still best of pals and I must say I am happy that they are :imcool: :rahrah:
Maybe I share with you one anecdote:
Meet parents session-
Social studies teacher : can you help your son choose an easy topic for his project? He choose to discuss the topic on whether to abolish capital punishment and this type of topic very difficult to score.
Me : but only need to pass social studies right?
Teacher : :yikes: (she was horrified and stared at me in shock!) but everyone gets a distinction!
Me : ( very paiseh and want to dig a hole in the ground!)
DH who was silent the whole time said later that teacher could not believe got parent like me. I only thought I want to let DS do what he likes, not do what can score. He should have the right to choose what he wants what. What is the harm? Anyway social studies pass can already
I am a very pragmatic person. :rotflmao:
Good luck and all the best, whatever decision you make. :xedfingers:

All true, but that's life...focus on what we can get involved in. Get better teachers, have smaller classes, level up everyone... said so many times but still must have hope. -

Actually govt receive a lot of tax revenue from casino.

They don't spend money training the croupier. The casino themseleves spend money training their own staff.
So maybe need MORE casino so got more tax revenue for govt to train teachers!! :rotflmao:
Our workforce have low productivity because we have an unlimited supply of cheap labour from neighboring countries. This will not change unless we make a conscious effort to stop the inflow of foreign cheap labour.
Think about this:
20 years ago, we started automating our car wash.
Today, we are back to having foreign workers at the car wash.
Why? It is probably cheaper to get the foreign workers to do the job, so the companies don't see a need to upgrade the auto car wash machines. So in reality, we are regressing!
It is not fair to say we have no good teachers. We do. But as in every profession, not all are good. That is inevitable. No amount of money spend can ensure that all are good. That is life. This is the economic theory of diminishing rate of return. -

Those facilities are expensive to set up (back in 2005 or something).
