Is GEP really necessary?

Makes my belief that they r looking for administrators even stronger. Why look out for a rocket scientist? Aren't we the richest country? Can always pay someone to deliver the rocket!!Nebbermind:
Have not been following LJ story. Did MOE claim credit for LJ's achievement?
No, they did not. I gave credit that the screening test was sound enough to not put him in the programme and get concussion from the English, his mum also said the rigors of English would not suit him. So I highlight this as a positive thing of MOE as opposed to the other view that screening was not accurate and screened LJ out.....
But seriously, perhaps that's why they take SS so seriously...and also, I think they even went thru Animal Farm...my O level lit text!! -

Then only the well-fed all-rounded Chinese PRCs will be in the programme. Excel in Chinese and well-rounded what. :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao:Then u will see the pre teen Chinese scorerS r all PRC from china! So the mainstream schools r for all rounded pupils? R they gifted? Being all rounded r not gifted. Why not? One mom has already said it is difficult to score >262. Not fair. - I can hear this resounding... Kekeke...

Thanks jtoh and Ksi for the (n+1) th clarification .
Moe getting credits for not spotting and nurturing gifted ones like LJ????
Sun_2010, you are hilarious. I can see many parents are themselves the gifted types though .[/quote]Sorry cherryc, this is another nth time about LJ and the last for me.. ..I know LJ is a happy boy and his wise parents played a big part. Not being in a programme not suitable is also a blessing you know and his wise parents know better.
If there is a need to propose a special platform for such kids, do it another way, not demolish a system for another group to do this and it is not right to keep mocking at MOE's current selection process using LJ. This demolition may not be your suggestion but please read the posts and ascertain for yourself. -

define whatever some means. in any other system leaving out a LJ would have made a joke out of a gifted system, not the gEP though. SingApore has its own gods. haha... what will foreign press say? -

Back from my lunch break and going off soon too.... for another tea break.
Now for another story, and it is a very sad one. This is an absolutely talented boy, but he was from a poor family. Parents work day and night to ensure there's food on the table, and illiterate. They did not know to put him to tuition or a good school. To them, having him in a neighbourhood school is good because he can walk home himself at P1. The boy scored a full score at P1. At P2, he fell into bad company, and at P3, his results were still ok, but a far cry. Poor in English but excellent in Math.
He then went on to a neighbourhood school, of course, and a normal stream. In his Sec 1 class, he challenged the teacher on Math questions. His teacher knelt down on his knees (no kidding) and asked him to give him a break because he could not handle his questioning. This boy started to play truant frequently. He left school with an 'N' level cert. He is a blue collar worker, and recently in and out of IMH. The society lost a contributor it never recognized, and the parent lost a son.
This boy beat me in every subject at P1, and I was a top student. This boy beats me in everything - from chess to card games to everything we know as kids.
Gifted, but no opportunities, no parents' support. These, I know are not the concern of the society and the government. But it is wrong.
Yes, its very sad to hear this story. Nowadays, there are counsellors in primary school. But the problem kid must first be identify by either the teachers or parents, then I believe this counsellors will come into the picture.
Maybe you can join in this team when you are back in Singapore. Keke  -

The problem is between one is HA but not been exposed to GEP questions and one is HA but exposed to GEP questions, tell me who will get through the GEP tests? Maybe both if the first one is in fact really gifted.
Actually, the word \"training\", \"hothoused\" might meant differently to each individual. Some treat \"training\" as sending for GEP Prep class, but some treat \"training\" simply as knowledge acquisition, learning new things. One is driven by passion, the other driven by goal. Passion will definitely go a longer way.
Whatever the definition might be, I still think it cannot be truly \"trained\". The kids must have certain ability to understand. For example, we teach a kid \"Fraction\", they must be able to understand the concept, if not, when the question twist ... they will not be able to solve the question. Or a certain EL vocal list, they can surely memorised and use the words, but usually there will be a lack of \"flow\" in the comp.
My point is certain knowledge just cannot be \"forced-feed\" into a child. Thus it is important to keep them learning at a pace that they are comfortable and happy .... of course occasionally we can stretch them a bit .... but stretching them based on our/society expectations ... will back fired somethings - it snaps.
You get my point. Some parents told me its unfair because of that. If they knew it, I guarantee you that the parents will do something before the GEP test if they had wanted their children to get in, probably few years ahead.
Sorry, I'm not one of them because I was not aware of this program till my child was in p3.
Got to go for tea break now. :celebrate: -
