My son just rejoined the local education system at P3 and has been granted exemption for Chinese. There’s no need to choose another second language. And it’s optional for the child to sit in Chinese classes and take exams like the rest of his peers. A classmate of his has chosen to opt out from Chinese classes whereas he chooses to continue with the classes and exams.

Even with the exemption, a child is still able to revoke the exemption at P6 and opt to take PSLE, if he or she desires to.

Hi slmkhoo, I'm just curious, why would you like your daughter to take PSLE though she has been studying overseas?

We are returning to Singapore in the middle of her Sec 2 year. SPERS is only at year-end, so rather than approaching individual schools for a place mid-year when we return, we thought she might as well take the PSLE to reserve a sec school place. She was posted to a school during the posting exercise and is on leave of absence till we return. We also did it to give her a taste of what the competition is like in Singapore as she has been very laid-back all these years overseas. We wouldn't have done it if she had had to take MT - adapting to 3 subjects \"Singapore-style\" was enough work. But we will ask her to study MT when we are back since she has 2.5yrs to work for the 'O' levels.

So far all the overseas kids I've heard of generally are exempted MT for PSLE, and yes, they come back during Summer Break and stay on to do PSLE, flying back to rejoin their new school term which would have already started by then. They are exempt MT but don't have to do another alternative 2nd language leh.

          Hi ladies

Wanna check with u if anyone knows.

When applying for uni or higher education, do we need to show proof of exemption? When u are exempted, do u get a letter stating that u are exempted and u are to show that in future? My concern is, my reason for exemption is due to special needs. So will it end up being forever in the records since every time we apply for a sch, we gotta show the exemption and thus the ‘history’ gets passed on?

this is something i afraid, is the hard truth...

the \"history\" does get passed on as the schools will ask why about the exemption.

If you are exempted in pri school, you are automatically exempted in

Sec school. By the time the child is in sec 4, O level results are based on best 6-7 subjects, Chinese can be excluded.

There are fewer repercussions than some people think.

Exemption is granted generally when child misses first 2 years of primary education.

It is also granted to children with learning disability. This has to be accompanied by a doctor’s letter.

Children who are exempted will have their PSLE t score pro rated based on
                3 subjects, EMS.

If they are strong in EMS, these children usually have high T scores.

If you are thinking of going to s SAP school, you can’t ask for exemption.

Children with 250 and above will be offered the opportunity to take a 3rd language, Japanese/ French/ German. Maybe more options now… I am not sure. But I know schools like hwa chong requires child to have Chinese as their 2nd language.

If I'm not mistaken, cannot apply via S1 posting to SAP schools if no MT. But it is possible to submit S1 posting to another school while submitting an Appeal to the SAP school the child wants to get into. My dd's classmate went in that way.

another way is via DSA. Have friends whose children are in Top SAP schools and exempted from MT.
