How come Malaysia manage to implement minimum wage and yet companies still find the labour cost competitive enough to setup businesses there?

China workers go for strikes against their employers demanding higher wages and yet companies still find them attractive?

Because the Malaysian minimum wage is $900 RM. They still undercut our costs.

But Malaysia cost of living is much lower than Singapore

If we were to make our wage similar to that of Malaysia, many Singaporean will be poorer than Malaysians in term of purchasing power.

Precisely because of the concerns you stated above, I consider minimum wage irrelevant to this discussion, if your point was to push for a minimum wage in Singapore using the Malaysian example. Suggest you consider your train of reasoning in bringing up minimum wage in the first place.

I believe there is a difference. I have many relatives in different part of Malaysia....and my purchasing power varies accordingly.

I guess to make fair comparison, we have to be comparing with those places that compete with us for investments that create jobs. That was what that article was about and initiated this line of discussion.

I have no philosophical objection to a minimum wage in Singapore, with all the usual provisos about it being logically and responsibly constructed.

The answer is in the title of the article.

                  Anyway, I was retrenched twice…

no big deal. Almost everyone in the company can’t wait for it to close down and shift out… so that they can seek better pasture after the payout. Good riddance… they say…

oh is it?? not many ppl can take that... my friend was so depressed...

it might be of a possible retrenchment for ur case so many ppl just waiting for it... for my friend, it was all of a sudden... she cried in the hr room when it was her turn, just couldnt take it cos of her financial burden with kids...

retrenchment benefits are just for short term... it is alright if one is single, no financial burden, but with kids all different story...

hope that for whatever reasons it is, companies who are moving out of sg should give advance notices just to tame the employees or it will be very ugly for them...

This is a Singapore company off shoring to other countries.

I guess you take the view that businesses and/or their owners are the enemy of workers.

Has it ever occurred to you that the environment in the company was bad precisely because the business was not doing well? Not everyone is so blase about losing their jobs, and not every closure is greeted with derision like yours.

Unless we (as in people with g'ment) are willing to work together to keep bringing businesses in, as a small country, we can only say good riddance so many times before everyone leaves town.
