P2 Math - General Discussion

Hi,plum-cake:
Its(i-Excel model as a tool) available at POP at bras B complex, toa payoh.
Hi plum-cake & Callie,
Was at POP at Thomson Plaza just now and saw the i-excel: Heuristic and model approach for P2 and P3 there. They don't have this book for P1 though but the P2 book also covers basic models.
Under the same FAN-Math series, there's a new book called i-excel: Models as a Tool for P2 and P3. These books only cover models with step by step instructions. No heuristic questions for this series.
Maybe you can check both i-excel series out and see if it's suitable for you.
I got Simon Eio's Problem-solving using models...available from P1-3. Fan-Math also has something similar...'Heuristic and Model Approach. Any idea when should I start teaching my P1 gal models ? -

Thanks Tisha
Take heart. I'm sure you can go beyond that.tisha:
I am good in algebra way of solving. this is such a new thing to me. Learning. My DS in P6 this year. Last year I helped him with models for ratio/percentage etc. Quite complex than the lower primary ones. But guess what, I could not have solved these problems with model when DS was in P1-P2. I'm progressing with DS, so now my level of model drawing has reached P5-P6

n Learning....think long way to go...........

Models is a whole new thing...something I just can't grasp. Just wondering when my gal can start learning it. Then can ask hubby to introduce her to it.
Thanks Tishatisha:

I started going thru last night.
For P1s make sure she/ he understands the addition and subtraction problems first. sove it with drawing the pictures. After trying some problems then teach them to solve it with the bar..(this is what I think) -

Hi Janet,
I agree, models is a new mathematical concept for all parents as we don't learn maths that way during our generation..
Algebra is more our forte.
Most schs will start models in P2 but some schs will start exposing P1 to very simple models in Term 4. I only starting going through models with my P2 DD during the Dec holidays last year. Her sch hasn't started teaching models yet.
Once your DD master her P1 work, you can consider starting on models slowly so she can slowly absorb because some students do find it hard to understand at first. Good luck.

Wow...you are super efficient...started last year already??...keke..
Hope you find the book useful and easy to understand.
I agree with you, the child need to understand their addition and subtraction problem sums well before embarking on models.

NO mah... I just started last night only. I mean to educate me first then my dd. My dd is in p2.

Our time then was mastering algebra...hubby used algebra to teach son but his teacher said it's better to use models instead.janet_lee88:

He is revising the basics of Maths in the meantime. Maybe a better time to introduce models would be Term 2. -
plum-cake:
Yeah... definitely a good idea to start learning first before imparting our knowledge to the kids...keke. This time round it's easier for me to guide my P2 as I learnt it with DD1 a few years back. ε ζ²Ή....you can do it....NO mah... I just started last night only. I mean to educate me first then my dd. I think itβs better to teach them numbers 1-20 first and know how to spell. Daughter told me her teacher is teaching the class 1-10 nowβ¦not even number bond yet. So I think hubby will start her on models from Term 2/3.
