P2 Math - General Discussion

Hi Plum-cake,
I told both my kids that if they have problems with Maths, pls ask daddy.
Last night, my gal was doing Math with hubby and he had to answer the phone call...she approached me for help. I went bonkers :stupid: bcos question was difficult. Something like, count 8th boy from the right and 8th boy from the left. How many boys are there in the team ? -

Hubby is good at teaching but not very patient...am I contradicting myself ? Daughter very sticky to me and wants me to coach her but I really really cannot teach Maths bcos I don't even understand. Also admit my interest is not there.

You are lucky your DH can help in coaching the kids. Mine, well, he gets involve when he hear me nagging DD and it goes like, ‘Get a single sum/word wrong and you don’t have to sleep’. That will set DD off crying which will set DH off as well and he will end up sending DD to her corner and nothing gets done.

My hubby tells daughter the same thing or else takes the cane...that will set her crying and nothing is done. So I told him if he continues like this, she will hate Maths...with this girl, she needs lots of persuasion and praise. If not, nothing can be done. -

Hi jesschan,
Yeah, Janet, I realise that some assessment books are really challenging, which is not necessary good for the kid. I usually use assessment books to revise with my boy and to train him to be more independent in learning, so if it is too difficult, it will be very demoralising for him.janet_lee88:
Last night, my gal had to do Math. Hubby asked me where I got that assessment book from...it is way too tough for a P1. The title, Éxcel in Maths by Fabian Ng. :siao: so difficult.
I agree with you......challenging assessments books can be demoralising to the kid and kills their interest in maths. Personally, I feel that assessment books should be chosen at levels pegged at the child's ability. That way, there's always a sense of achievement when they can solve a problem sum. -

Ya, nowadays, maths includes lots of heuristic type questions and lots of HOTS (higher order thinking skills) questions. Can be chanllenging for us parents. :?

I personally feel there is no point giving my son 3 difficult questions when he get demoralized…rather give him 6 questions which he can do with some thinking…this way he is happy and would be raring to go on.

Now that I find 'Excel in Maths'too tough and demoralizing, I wont get it anymore. Usually assessment books are used to revise and for exposure...but if it's too tough, the child won't be motivated to do it. Thus I get those which has diff levels of difficulties, so that my older boy will want to continue.[/quote]A good book to try: Step by Step Maths by Simon Eio (EPH)

It starts off the chapter with simple technical concepts that students must know, then slowly progress into slightly hard questions with a twist, followed by problem sums.
For lower primary, foundation is extremely important.
This book focuses on the basic techniques before jumping on to the application and process skills.
Very good for parents/tutors to teach systematically.

Hi mrswongtuition,
Thanks for your recommendations.
Simon Eio’s Step by Step is not bad…have been buying it for my son since P1.
