Wow, looks like everyone is getting excited about the new chapter of their DD and DS’ lives. Hahaha. Two years ago I was as clueless and excited as all of you. Haha.

Like Astee said, the school will give you information on books, uniform, shoes and school bus vendor. You can actually sign up with the school bus vendor and buy the uniforms on the orientation day if I remember correctly. The school uniform vendor actually sell good black shoes that is cheap and durable. It actually lasted for close to two years now for DS. Haha. I suggest getting two pairs of shoes so they can wear on alternate day. I also sew DS’s name on his shose as they have gymnastic for PAL and they will take out their shoes. Hard to tell which one if they are similar brand and design. Agree with Astee that you will need at least two sets of PE for PE and PAL. My DS’s uniform is also very colorful now. Need to buy a new set for him end of the year when we buy uniform for DS2.

I pack breakfast and lunch for DS daily so he does not need to buy from canteen as he is such a slow decider and eater, hahaha. But the price of food is quite low. For $0.60, a child can get a bowl of noddles. So if they eat lunch and breakfast at school, $1.50 to $2 a day is sufficient. To primary school kids, the bookstore is a shopping mall. They will often go buy stickers or erasers or others from bookstore when they have spare cash ;-). So don’t give too much money.

A tip for school bag. If you interested to buy those ergonomic school bag for your kids, wait for Metro sale in December. You can get Impact Ergonomic school bag for $49 instead of the usual $100+ :-). So far has seen the bag on sale for at least two years in a row now.

Oh one more thing to add, one the first week of school, the school will arrange for a upper primary student to take care of the P1 kids during recess. The upper primary student will bring the P1 boy or gal to canteen and teach them to buy food and help them. So parents can be assured their kiddos are well taken care of ;-).

Many thanks to Astee n Rejoice for so much useful info!!

About misplacing shoes, I have even heard a parent of a Sec 1 pupil complaining to the school about the kid wearing a brand new pair of Adidas shoes on the first few orientation days but coming back with an old pair at the end of the week. Apparently, there was an activity in a special room that required removal of shoes. And upon leaving the room, the 12 yr old could not find her shoes!! There were only a few pairs left so she knew most probably hers were already worn by others. Leaving with no choice, she quietly wore an old similar pair of shoes home and kept mum in case she gets scolded!! Ya it happens to bigger kids too. Was the new shoe finally found : Nope.

Astee - I like the 3 + 2 sets of attire as suggested.

Rejoice - are the shoes sold in school entire canvas or partial like Bata shoes?so do u sew initials on the tongue?

            Rejoice,

Welcome again to P1 parents networking...haha,now you should be much wiser 😄

Agreed with your point on monies - previously when my DS started P1, without lunch, he only get $1 a day. Simple reason....the \"shopping mall\" is just next to the canteen and \"window shopping\" is too convenient. So in order to prevent impulse buying, i gave him a dollar and it was enough for recess.

Now with lunches in school, he gets $2 a day, sometimes he can even treat his friends to tit-bits or drinks *faint*. So parents, monitor your child spending carefully, otherwise :moneyflies: .

            Regards,
            Astee

Oh ya forgot to ask the "Guru"s: I noticed some TGPS pupils with name tags sewn on PE shirts but some others without? So it is not consistent throughout the school but on a personal or needs basis?

                Ninjago,

I hesitated in replying this question when i see the word \"Guru\"s as i don't deemed myself as one, 😉 i am here just sharing my own experienced and also learning more from the different parenting styles.

So for my case - PE Shirts with no name - because i am LAZY...hehe. Previously there was a School white PE shirt, which my DD had. So to avoid doing sewing and \"unsewing\" (removing to replace with my DS name). I decided not to sew her name on it at all. The school/teachers were ok with. That was 2009.

This year when i bought a new House PE shirt for my DS, he insisted i must sew his name on it. So i guessed the school is now more strict on name tags.

It would also be good to have name tag sew on PE attire as P1 have their swimming lesson during PE lessons and if the child happens to misplace his/her T-shirt, it would be, again, easier to retrieve it with the name tag. 😓

                Regards,
                Astee

Haha Ninjago, well said about Astee. She is most "senior" among us ;-).

The black shoes that sold at school are canvas shoes. Not as trendy as those in Bata. But those partial PVC or synthetic leather shoes cracked easily especially if buy from sale since some of them might be sitting in the store for too long. Yes I sewed my DS’s name on the underside of the tongue. That way it can not be seen from outside :-). But later I got lazy when I bought him another pair of shoes. So now DS will make sure he wears the shoes with his name on for his gymnastic lesson. Hahaha

I also sewed name tag on DS’s PE shirt. When you go to buy the uniform, do ask the vendor about the name tag. Normally they will get them ready before school starts.

Somehow I find the students in TGPS quite honest. DS lost his folder, water bottle and even his Casio watch in a few incidents. But he always manage to find them back at lost-and-found. For his black Casio watch, the teacher even called me to confirm that the watch is his before releasing to him. This I find to be very considerate. But then things like pencil, eraser will also MIA :-). So don’t get them expensive stationary. But get them good quality pencil that does not break easily :-).

Just to check… When the P1s have swimming during PE, they will have to bathe themselves. I wonder how do 2 teachers ensure they are then properly attired for the next lesson or that is usually happens at the end of the day?

I called the school regarding next year’s operating hours. The clerk said it will only be confirmed at the end of the year. Any insider news if there’s a change to the timing? I do hope that it will start earlier so end earlier can come back for lunch.

                        Hi Beauty,

The swim lesson happens in the morning, before recess last year. Not sure with this year school time if it is still before recess. That question never crossed my mind, haha. I think the teacher will be supervising them. Since they wear PE shirt for the rest of the day, I think it is quite easy for them to dress themselves.

I have the same feeling as the new school hours. Wrote to the principal last month with my feedback and she replied they are reviewing the school hour next year. I also hope that the school will start and end early so that DSs have time to rest in the afternoon.
