      VooVoo:
Given that chess is NYPS' niche area, does the school make the students pick up chess?

Can a P1 kid join the school's chess club?
All p1 children do chess for one term during curriculum time under the school's active learning program.
And yes, they are allowed to join the school's chess club. Training is on Thursday's for p1s. If they are really good they can request to change to Friday training where there are more rated players.

Thanks for info! Is your kid in the chess club too? do you still have to send him/her for external training?

          hamster:
I don't think so, what I know there is a class have 2 model pupils are girls. If I not wrong, one of girl has the same score with one of the top 5 achiever award, but only can choose 5. So the one process all the qualities will go to model award. This was the what I heard.

Unless the criteria has changed this year, I recall that 1 or 2 years back, for a particular class, the same student got high achiever and model student. That same class also had 2 girls for model pupils....

Learned a lesson today. I always thought there would be a BIG clock in front of the hall for major exams or contests. Today, AMC was held in the gallery. Before it started, the teacher announced there was no clock and the students had to use their own watch. Time management was critical as the students had only 40 minutes. Couldn’t the teacher prepare a clock? Nowadays, many students do not have a watch as they are using handphone’s clock. Is handphone allowed in exam or contest like this? For AMC, no calculator is allowed! From now on, I will make sure my children have a watch for any exam or contest!

I think very few schools have chess under DSA. The only one I know is ACSI.
