My husband went for the P1 Talk last Sat. Mrs Lee said 3 things that the K2 child needs to practise now.


1) sleep by 9pm
2) each meal completes within 20mins
3) know $$ counting

Is it possible to get through NYPS (in some style i.e. relaxed, happy and graduating to a top secondary school) without extra tuition?


I'd appreciate some honest feedback from parents of current NYPS pupils. If this has been discussed ad nauseum, feel free to tell me. :imdrowning:

It also depends on the quality of teaching in the school - NYPS is getting a reputation of merely being a Testing Centre, I wanted to hear if this is at all warranted, or more likely a sign of jealousy.

It's one thing to achieve high rankings in the academic league tables, but if behind that parents are shelling out $$$$ on extra tuition, it makes a mockery of the school's achievement. So it's about the parents too...

So it's about the parents too...[/quote]Depends on who is saying that of the school? Parents of existing students or those whose kids did not get into the school. But it is so difficult to decipher truth from myth. Something true to someone may not be to another. For every person you find who says the school is gd, you can always find another who say it is not. Where will it end?

As you rightly put, it is also very much the parents. Must your child get to a top sec school before you agree the school and teachers are good? Is this your yardstick? I just had lunch with a friend who is a trained teacher and who teaches at a top and well known enrichment centre. She says that there are some kids who despite her using all types of teaching tools and methods will still just not get it. It is back to the question of nurture or nature. No one will want to believe their kid is of a lower calibre because it reflects on themselves (nature). It is always easiest to point their finger at something or someone else.

So, Worried? Concern? We all have a choice. You don't have to send your child there. Some one else may just appreciate that one less competition.

1. Are there a lot of optional enrichment for P1? If yes, are there fixed days for such enrichments or it can be any day? I'm worried my boy might be keen in the enrichments but clash with his other activities. Need to start planning his schedule next year as we need to book early for the violin teacher.

2. How long is recess? My Mr Slow Pokey Poke eats super slowly. Need to start training him to eat within time limit.

1. Wed-Sat. Mostly on Wednesdays.
2. Recess is 30minutes. My boy is a super slow eater at home (up to 1.5 hours to finish a meal) but surprisingly, he gobbles his food very quickly during recess and can still squeeze in time to play catching, go library.
