Hi BigDevil
IMO, I don't think it's a MUST to learn beforehand, just an advantage. It won't be much of a problem if your DD is a good reader.
My son started reading English books quite early. His kindy didn't teach HYPY either. We just got him a couple of K2 assessment books & Chinese story books with Chinese & HYPY words. He coped well in school for T1 & T2.
They are more into Chinese char starting from T3.
If you are really 'kiasu', you might want to enrol her in one of those HYPY/P1 preparation 'crash course' organised by some of the language centres during the Dec hols. Look out for them. -

DS1 is in P1 this year. Enjoying school so far. :xedfingers: No complaints about school or teachers. Just that classmates seem to like to borrow & mutilate his stationery - namely erasers. Had replaced umpteen erasers since school started.....

NYPS normally has P1 orientation on 1st Saturday of start of Term4 school holidays. School year is longer this year.
Hi Mickeyhmh
Have just registered myself here.... stumbled upon this support group whilst surfing and your post caught my attention!! My son is in NYPS P1 this year too and I totally know what you mean when you talked about your son's stationery!! In just the first month of school, my son had lost up to 48 colour pencils... sigh!! Anyway, nice to \"meet\" a fellow parent of NYPS

That's what I would like to find out too!

Hehe, my first question to a NY parent... Does your son have a lot of homework?
My DD is entering NYPS next year.[/quote]Hi BigDevil,
Am a newbie here

That's exactly what we have in mind....those 1 month before-school-starts crash course.
But after reading your response, I guess we can do without it. My DD had always been quite strong with Chinese, and that's one subject I probably won't lose too much sleep over. She even tried out some of her cousin's P2 chinese exam papers and was able to get near 90% correct. -

Welcome! Welcome! So good to find a healthily growing support group going here. Now we have another source to guide the newbie NYPS parents.
Wow...2 sons in NYPS in 2 years! Your DS2 is lucky to have older brother to guide him through school!

Hi BigDevil,
Yes, good for DS2 to have his brother help him out, should the need arise. Have a daughter too.... due for P1 in 2012!! Am an old girl of SCGS so DD will have a choice of schools to choose from. Will see how her brothers (and me!!) cope in NYPS then decide when the time comes for her registration  So is your DD looking forward to P1? -
Hi precious3
Nice to meet you too! Which class is your DS1 in? Maybe he's my son's classmate?
Wow! I have boy, boy, girl too! my DS2 & DD are twins born 2006. Joining their brother in 2013. -
precious3:
Most definitely! We brought her along during registration and introduced the school to her. But of course the school looks a lot different from during my time there. When I was there, what is now NYPS was still NYGHS!!Hi BigDevil,

Furthermore, my DD is one who loves going to school. Never cried a single day since first day in nursery. She'd rather not have any school holidays at alll!!
So with a boy already in the school, do you still plan to go to the orientation on Nov 21? -

My DS is in 1J. Yours? Wow... twins!! They must keep you very busy....Hi precious3
