        Hi,

My kids are in P1 and P2.

For P1 and P2, they only have SA1 and SA2. No CA. Homework appears to be minimal if kids manage to finish that in class.

Weekly english spelling and for chinese, they have weekly mini test based on what they’ve learnt.

There is chinese class streaming after P1 SA1 results and teacher’s observation.

P1 are expected to be able to do english expression (mini compo - 8 sentences) and chinese compo by SA2. Not sure if this is widely practised by all schools.

P1 and P2 are in afternoon session while P3 & above are in afternoon session. School not going on single session as they cannot cut down on size of intake.

Would like to know more about upper primary (eg. streaming, etc…)

... My kids are in P1 and P2...

Ah... no wonder you like Molin so much, MMM 🙂 It is said that Molin's students come mainly from Tao Nan, Konghwa, and Maha Bodhi.

Hi Chief… I agree with your observation on TNS, MBS and KHS students gg to Molin. It’s probably the only enrichment class (at this point) where I don’t need to reevaluate their effectiveness year after year to see if I should continue to send the kids there. So far, I can see results and prices are reasonable.

                Hi chasing jelly,

Welcome to the MBS family. In this group, we also have dizzyguy and netchat? (refer to geylang school thread) who have registered their kids for P1 next year.

I was reading your previous post and wondered if it is common for them to do compo writing in P1? Sounds a bit too rush for the kids isn’t it?

Personally, I felt that this is challenging. Eg. for english, how many kids can write grammatically correct sentences with perfect spelling at P1??? Some are still struggling with spelling. But I did see that in my girl’s P1 class last year and this is probably the result of early preparation by the parents or that the child has always been a reader so that helps??? But I felt that most kids are not ready. I would be happy if by P1 term 2, the kids are well adjusted and already used to school life and requirements.

But I believe, this is not just the case in MBS. I am not sure if "compo writing" they actually call it written expression or kan tu xie hua (for chinese compo) is widely assessed in all Singapore P1. I know my friend’s son in Temasek had the english written expression thingy. Though for chinese, I think it’s not very common (probably more in the case of SAP school???). My nephew is studying in Rosyth (P3 this year) and my sil commented that MBS chinese teaching and requirement is ahead in that aspect when I showed her the things they did in school.

In the case of my kids… it’s still a challenge for them (esp my P2 as P1 still don’t have mini compo for their assessment until SA2). My P2 has the content but… she tend to write what she thinks and her sentences structure is just haywire so she lost marks that way. Also, though we kept emphasizing, she just don’t read what she writes.

BTW, which phase did you register in MBS? We are looking out if there are other ex-students.

We registered under Phase2B. Sounds like we have little to no choice but to send our child for some language preparation enrichment class.

                        Hi Chasingjelly,

Before you rush out to the nearest enrichment lessons, I think you need to do some evaluation on your child first. I've to give credit to the school that they really teach the kids rather than encouraging parents to send their kids to external classes so teachers have a \"easier job\". If the kids have some weakness, teachers will conduct tuition for the child. Eg. my P2 attended chinese compo class that was conducted by his chinese teacher. We are hoping that the teacher continues this term.

But there are some basic things that you need to ensure before P1 :
                        1) the ability to read/ recognise words. The child should be able to spell.
                        2) HYPY

I am a enrichment craze mum but that's also because I felt that I do not have so much time to teach them personally and I am a strong believer if kids does well, they will gain self esteem and confidence,etc... so I let the experts do it. I also observed that there is a mix of parents. Some more kiasu than others  Eg. my son's class IMO is rather competitive. With his results that I thot is not bad only came in 15/30. But my girl during P1 had 2 points lower than him managed to come in 6/30..... This is really interesting as it shows that her class is probably less competitive.
