      hi fel2729,

P1 no exams, but they will have ongoing assessments (show & tell, written work etc). sometime during the year you may receive a piece of paper to inform parents what is being assessed. from time to time, the child will undergo tests - but I did not receive any prior notification. To me that’s good becos it doesn’t stress me and it’ll show if my kid knows what’s going on.

During half year and year end, you will also get report books on their results - and there are actually marks inside. Year end, if your child is amongst the top, he/she will know by way of cert presentation; else you have no clue becos they don’t indicate the position in class/standard.

P1 follow on to P2 - same class, same teachers.

For P2, largely the same EXCEPT P2 kids will undergo SA2 and that will form the major component on which class the child gets streamed into.

oh oh. I called the school today. First day of school, kid (well, P2 kid) only needs to bring water bottle and story book. Can’t recall if need to bring stationery, but will do so.

Hurrah! at least he won’t have to lug all the heavy books at one go.

            hi fel2729,

Don’t fret overly. Last year this time, I was wondering if DS will be handicapped becos I’ve never read to him dizigui nor ask him to read. Aiyoh, false alarm - scaring myself for fun only.

I feel the P1 stuff is still quite easy to manage. The only thing we had to prepare for is spelling. BTW, the first term (or so) chinese spelling is entirely HYPY, so don’t get surprised.

My friend (kids in another school) gets a full list of tests and when these are. I don’t like becos you may not know what to prepare the kid for (eg test grammar/vocab, what can you do with the child). And she gets all stressed up at the beginning of term.

Anyway, if they know, they know. If they don’t, I hope my child’s teacher can let me know what areas I should focus on. Else, I don’t really want to have to get myself all stressed up over his tests. i already get very stressed over show and tell (mine can tell me last minute tomorrow got show and tell…heart attack).

oh oh. just remember that in lower pri (okay, P1 at least), neatness is impt. USE RULER to draw lines. Mine had to erase and correct becos he uses freehand.

Being a P6 parent, i see little sense that parent gets so excited to prepares his P1 child academically.. i agree Schools are not sharing too much with their parents. Otherwise the harmonious environment e.g. in Hong Wen will become a stressful one. Come on.. give your child some space. He needs that to grow :).

Well lionheart, one thing is that you are ‘guo lai ren’, so know what to stress over and what not to. Indulge us newbie parents a bit - at least now we know what to stress and what not to. 😉

All the best for your child in the upcoming psle.

                    Hi lionheart n hquek,

Tks for both yr advise and sharing of experiences. I was expecting more stress in pri sch compared with pre sch. Cos my son's childcare is alr laying basic foundation for the kids maybe to prepare them for the real thing in pri sch. They were taught simple multiplications, nouns...etc and they hv english n chinese wkly spelling test and during that time i thought it's really stressful to be children of this generation (heehee). Therefore, thought that i shd be more prepared and expect more of p1 too. Now I'm glad n relieved tat at least for lower pri, don hv to stress the kids too much. At least to the kids, they will enjoy gg to sch 😉

Does the school have any rule about the colour of jacket?

It’s really cold in the morning, DD1’s jackets are all pink.

                        TIA
