P3 book list has many items listed as optional, eg grammar, 2 dictionaries from different publishers, Chinese Readers, E-dictionary…

Any advice if they are necessary?

They are not used in school unless otherwise the teachers request the children to have them.

Imho, as far as holistic education matters, Parents are not suppose to know the top score... It is about how good a student performs against himself not others. Why are we as parents adding extra pressure and expectations to students.

Hope you know for years why many of us had been pushiing this to be implemented years ago ..Happy it is implemented in my d1 PSLE year 🙂

Importantly, it is student ndividual exams performance and achievement that matters. Ultimately, the goal of the Student is to pass the exam and get posted to the secondary school of his choice.

Since i had received queries about my son's performance ...To supporters of PSG .... my son met expectation; happy, healthy, matured and indpendent ; posted to ACS(I); got recognized for his good character , achieved his psle targets, achieved school team status for wushu, nationals status for international chess and an active student leader. I can't ask for more.

Will take a month break and prepare my d2 for PSLE 2014.

There are two schools of thought when come to this implementation, and there have been much heated debates in separate threads within this forum and in ST as well, so let's not go further here.

Just to clarify that the information seek is not always directly meant for the parents per say; sometimes can be from high achiever kids as well, so as to better gauge themselves where they will stand at the national level and not play the frog in the well syndrome.

Between, congrats to you and your boy!

How many parents here know about Hong Wen's past years' PSLE score before you decided to register your child in the school?

Parents who attended P1 registration briefing, parents' briefing, teas session with P, or other events whereby the P spoke about the school's direction, would know that although academics excellence is important, the devt of the child's char and values are more important becos it will decide the child's success in life. The 1st 12 yrs is when we are able to positively influence the child before the \"rebellious\" teenage yrs take over.

I'm not arguing for or against MOE's decision to not announce the top scorer's name. I just wish to post my understanding of Hong Wen's direction in regards to the students. It is difficult to find out information on PSLE scores and PSLE achievements but I take it as part of the school's culture and belief. Hong Wen has been practising this before MOE's decision.

Whether parents' values and belief is align with the school is another matter but we must understand why such academic information is not made known officially by the school.

[/quote]Singabox, Perhaps you are new to HWS, it is HWS belief that academic results is NOT everything. and there is other learning objective besides academia. Scores are relative; a high achiever only knows that his best is yet to be, He always battle against himself to be a better person.

Thru the years, it is parents whom are interested in the PSLE results. Just to share.. a few years ago, a bunch of friends from some popular schools did simple surveys with PSLE kids esp GEP on the same topic.. they told me otherwise.. it is the parent whom are interested about the grade not them..

I will leave this judgement to you. But for me, i know HWS did the right thing so as to stay holistic and coach students to make learning their lifelong objective. Hence HWS decides not to publish results, no ranking of results , low/no publicity of school achievements and even little advertisements of ex students' achievements whom are President/ SAF scholars recipients or World beaters in Wushu or Arts.

lets all stay on course and supports HWS Vision - A Happy, Healthy, Vibrant Learning organization.

There’s no time-table for P2 on what to bring on the first day of school. May I know from past experience, what should the student bring on the first day of school?

                      Thanks
