I understand that 3A's students are suppose to be good in all subjects, while 3B and 3C ones are weaker in 1 subject respectively. So likely 3C students are weaker in chinese (but good in MA & EL), hence HCL is only offered to 3A & 3B. Can confirm my understanding? Tks.My son is in P3 this year and I think the school actually just focus on Class A & B. We had a Meet the Principal session and only Class 3A & B parents are asked to stay behind to talk about Higher Chinese etc..
And the class size gets smaller for the classes like F,G...newuser:
My understanding with my son's last year P2 teacher is P3A to P3C are the better ones whereas P3D to P3H are balloted , there is no so called not so bright class.
Actually from the SA1 result, you can roughly figure out how your child stands from the level position. One of the feedback I have given to the teacher is to provide parents with a max, min, average scores for each subjects. Now I can only know his class average score rather than his level average scores. -
TimTim,
Your analysis sounds logical to me; except that HCL is NOT offered to 3A & 3B only, only the parents are briefed, probably in line with your analysis. However, any child who produces good results for all 4 subjects in P4 will still be offered HCL. HCL is offered based on P4 overall results, not P3.
Pupils who take HCL will need to stay back one additional day in P5 in addition to their regular supplementary classes for HCL lessons, and will have to take 5 papers at PSLE, out of which, HCLโs score will be excluded for the T-Score. To top it off, unless the child is targeting SAP school, HCL has no impact on his entry to any other non-SAP secondary school.
Because of the introduction of show and tell, as well as bite-size assessments for P1 & P2, the variable factor affecting the overall results for P1 & P2 will also varied. So in my opinion, the streaming at P2 may not be as academically driven as it used to be, say 3 - 4 years back. -

You mean to enter SAP school, example Nan Chiau High, must have HCL? So stringent? I thought overall T-Score also plays a part. That is, if cut-off, is 250 points, and the kid has 260 points but without HCL, then not qualify?TimTim,

My understanding is, HCL allows the child additional 1 - 3 points depending on whether it is pass / merit / distinction, that's all. Any child not taking HCL can still enter a SAP school. For example, if a child score 245 in PSLE with merit for HCL will see his score adds up to 245 + 2 = 247 for SAP school, but any other child who score 248 / 249 /250 can still enter the same SAP school even though he may not have taken HCL. The edge / advantage of HCL over non HCL is that 3 points.
However, there are many pupils who struggle with HCL, and therefore it impact the other 4 core subjects, and in the end, the marks for their 4 core subjects suffered as well, impacting the overall T-score. Is it worth it for the child to struggle with 5 subjects for that mere 3 points? In my opinion, unless it is what the child really wants, I much prefer to focus on the 4 main core subjects. I am not saying HCL is not good, just thinking / weighing the pros and cons of HCL along the PSLE lines and the time factor for preparation work and study.
My P3 said she wants to take HCL, so I :faint: Then again, as a parent, I will support my children in their choice, even if it means more white hair for me .... -
Hi, Does anyone have any idea what is the average score for individual subjects in P2?

This is something I believe only the teachers in P2 can advice.
This should be asked in the Parent teacher meeting.
NCPS does not indicate such information in their report books. Instead they have class position and level position for SA2. -
hee hee, actually i forgot to ask during PTM cos its not very important to me - as i think the child's progress is more important than the result. But read in other thread that the average score is good to know, hence, thought of just asking if anyone knows. Thanks VJA for your reply
Will ask the teacher if given a chance to meet next time. -
