            Dear YZPS:

My daughter is in the P2B Chinese class this year. During the 4-day PSLE marking days holidays, I had intended to do intensive Chinese revision with her during that period, but found that both the 2B Chinese workbook and 课后冠军王 were not with us - the teacher was still holding on to them. Hence I had to rely on just the textbooks and some other assessment materials bought elsewhere.

Both the 2B workbook and 冠军王 were only returned to the class on the day before the actual Chinese SA2 exam, with the workbook left unmarked despite the long wait. Through the frenzy on Tues (23Oct) morning going through the previous exercises done in these materials, I had decided that she may not need to bring this 冠军王 to school, since it is the final exam already that day. Both the 2A and 2B textbooks, and 2B workbooks were in the bag yesterday.

After the exam, however, the Chinese teacher told the class to do the outstanding exercises left in the 冠军王, and upon learning that some pupils did not bring the book, gave them a scolding and said that she will not mark their books even if they did the exercises thereafter. I find these harsh and disparaging remarks rather uncalled for and unbecoming of a teacher, especially a senior one.

            试问这般不必要的责骂和不留情面,如何教得孩子们“尊师重道”?

I wish the school admin would consider how this issue, though minor, relates to the kind of respect and values of personal responsibility that a teacher should impart to pupils at such a tender and impressionable age.

            Thank you.

My child in 2B Chinese class said the teacher often uses degrading terms to label the kids. 哑巴,耳聋 were often heard. She scolds the class most of the time. She gave 15 pages of work in a go over a weekend. It wasn’t the first time. My child spent the whole weekend trying to complete her work.

During tests, she is mean in marking. A few times I felt that my child’s answers were not wrong but they were not given any marks. I hope the school is aware of this and I pray that she is not teaching Chinese to my child again. This teacher makes children fear and hate Chinese.

Though my child is not in class 2B, the workload experience, not just Chinese subject alone, includes:

                (a) they are asked to do the exercises even before the chapter is taught

                (b) doing exercises up till the day of the exam and so there is no chance of the teacher going through the paper and explain the answers to the students

© after SA2, assign exercises not assigned to the students before the exam.

                (d) exercises given to the students sometimes one day before the exam for revision?

                (e) many pages of work given for more than 1 subject

                Shake head!

On the subject of the school hours, can anyone share their child’s experience and why the HMT from P3 onwards starts after school? I thought in other schools, the HMT are taught during the normal school hours?

If the child needs to stay back for HMT and other schools’ children do not, would this not put the Yangzheng’s children at a great disadvantage at the national level since they have so much lesser time for revision and on other subjects.

Could the school admin explain why Yangzheng Pri Sch is so different from how other schools in the hours allocated in conducting the HMT.

My boy had to stay back for HMT in P5 and P6 when he was studying that in a SAP primary school previously. That was after the ‘streaming’ when they had to qualify and choose to take HMT after P4. Before that, the whole cohort takes HMT and therefore all Chinese lessons are undifferentiated and conducted during normal lesson time.

At P3, there isn’t really too much more material to cover, so there shouldn’t be too much invasion into revision time actually. More like rest and play time. The real crunch comes in when the child goes to higher primary.
