Poi Ching

pow ching tian:
Just to highlight to all parents whose got kids studying in poi ching. Are u aware that they grade your kids on the day of orientation and that this was not made known to parents (but fully aware by parents who already had kids in the school). Also for parents who have kids in p4 are u aware a particular class had the same form teacher since p1. Final conclusion poi ching has a very sleezy approached to their way of administration either because of MOE or their principal. Anyway every year we read or parents trying to get into the school and now I see many more finding ways to get out coz their best is not good enough. 2 more years to go for me.
My kid is in P3 and I am aware that the school uses the assessment result @orientation for branding the kids(thanks to Kiasuparent forum); those who did better are in the best/better class in P1/P2. I heard they had already dropped this assessment @orientation for current P1 students and kids are randomly allocated classes.
For this year P3 students, they have changed the way they streamed student for P3 classes. If your kid are in P4 and up, they are probably still in the best 2 classes scheme. For this year P3, students are graded based on their P2 results, each will have their overall position when compared against the whole P2 cohort. Those with average score of 80+%(can't remember the exact figure) will be streamed into the 5 best classes with the #1 students allocated to Class 3C, #2 to Class 3D...and so on. #6 will go to Class 3C, #7 to Class 3D....etc so all 5 best classes will be mixed ability. The rest of the students(below +/-80%, I think) will be in 3H & 3I. This was explained to us during the Principle meet the parent session at last year end before exam result and class allocation was made known to parents. The school hopes that this new approach will enable the weaker students in each class to learn from the majority of their more academic-capable classmates, and help more students to do better instead of focusing on 2 best classes to bring glory to school.
How effective this new streaming translate to grades, we shall wait and see.
Some parents are unhappy about the best 2 classes scheme and \"believe\" the better teachers are assigned to teach the best class. However this best class scheme seem to be the norm practice in most schools(at least for those schools my colleagues/relatives/friends's kids attend).
Think most parents are unhappy with the school as these 2 years, their top student result is not as great as before. -
Thanks for the enlightment, Jar. The new arrangement sounds quite interesting and sensible in some way.
But will it be quite some drastic change to those P3 students? New classmates, new teachers…would it be disruptive? How are kids adapting so far? Any P3 parents here to share?
Anyway, Whatever the system is, all has its different sets of pro’s and con’s. There is no perfect one that suits all or pleases all.
I personally welcome the change. Academic result should not be the only gauge on one’s overall ability. By grouping all academically-strong students together, the pressure among themselves is huge too. Good and bad.
Anyway finger crossed, hope the implementation of the new system will not be too disruptive. This year P1 is a lucky batch. -

Actually regardless of scheme use to stream student into P3, they will definitely have new classmates as in P1/P2, there are only 30 students in a class and P3 class is 40+. In my kid P3 class, he has few P1/2 classmates and some old friends from his kindergarden/school bus, and the rest are new classmates. He is making new friends although at times, he will still find his P1/2 friends during recess or CCA. In fact, I think this streaming had opened his social circle and he now has more friends in school. Thanks for the enlightment, Jar. May I know other than streaming students at the end of P2, how abt end of P3, P4, P5?
Any diff between the best 5 classes vs 3H/3I in terms of syallbus or subjects?
woo…a class of 40+ is huge! How big is a class in P4 to P6?
How can same teacher in P3 as in P1,P2 esp if there is streaming? By luck? -

Hi nonKiasu, I heard from another mummy, previously, every year there were always a handful of students moving \"up\" or \"down\" the classes based on performance (maybe) or other considerations. But this year, the policy seems to undergo some changes. What exactly is the new norm, I have no idea either.May I know other than streaming students at the end of P2, how abt end of P3, P4, P5?

Thanks, ululu. Looks like it's up to the principle to decide n change policy n we will know when times come. Just like they just informed us that next yr, P3 will be in the afternoon n we just have to accept it. So, past practise is not impt anymore...not in this sch.

Hi NonKiasu, where did you get this info from? School website did not state that P3 be in the noon session next yr:S -
cpdalin:
It was announced by the principal himself on the morning that has a Di-Zi-Gui talk.... hmm, i think in Feb? I was late for that talk and lucky met my friend's wife there and she told me. Later, I confirm with my neighbour who also attended the talk on time.
