I’m a Dad of a child whom Ms June is teaching, and I’m writing as an encouragement to her good intentions.
I’m really surprised that the few parents whom were looking for the so-called “support” for their grievances. Well I’ve a few points I want to make, and likewise you guys have all the right to think and feel the way you wish.
First of all, most of us are all working adults or professional enough. We have all the reasons why we had selected Maris Stella as the school for our kids. As such we need to also bear in mind all good schools have its benchmarks set very high. And this is coherent in all levels, being administratively, academically, play time etc. In basic for the good of those who kind of forgotten the fundamentals of things.
1)\tA teacher’s role is to educate the children
2)\tA teachers role is to instill discipline and character building
What a teacher is not suppose to do
1)\tEntertain the parents or become a PR person, as the school is not an event company
2)\tOr perhaps do we think a teacher should be already busy with 30 odd students and on top of that keep her image as a “pretty young thing” to another 60 odd parents? (try doing that)
We must all remember, this every parent have different levels of discipline, some would say spare the rod and spoil the child, some would opt for a more gentle approach. Well face it, when our kids go to the army, you want them to be mummy’s boy? Or do you want them to be a man? In any case, in the army we are all called by our initials and surnames only even we have proper names. Face it why all the over reaction? Would you rather Ms Tan broadcast your son’s name in the mass email?
Are we suggesting that the teacher in school now needs a PR officer to handle the parents so that she can write proper emails with perfect EQ? Can’t we already feel that especially good schools have to stretch extra mile and put protocols in place to please the basic need of parents? Do we think these resources could be made better to channel their efforts in shaping good character?
Well, Ms Tan’s email and writing EQ may not be like my secretaries we have in the office, but one is also not blind to see that the underlining efforts done by Ms Tan only reflects her zealous efforts in ensuring the parents are kept updated, and do their upmost in bridging the parental support for the child.
Imagine, how you would feel if, someone is not upfront with you and condemns you on the back. If you are right about Ms Tan that her emails to parents are a direct translation of her being a wicked witch to the kids, maybe all you will get is a pat on the back. But what if you are wrong, if so you would have destroyed her career, after MOE and her bosses read all these un-called for negative comments. Do you think its fair, if the tables were to be turned onto you at work?
One thing on our mind is to have firm and good teachers educating our children, and rather than fake PR ones that don’t bother. Which would we prefer? And to remind us all, a good teacher is not going to be your best friend.
Look at the comments, “I’m so tired after work… etc.” doesn’t this sound totally complacent. Parenting is never a discounted mission. I can only question, was it embarassing for the child if the parent cannot keep up? Or the parent’s Kiasu attitude, not to let their kids lost out? I would think the latter. Well if the parent cannot keep up then its ok, let the kid know that they have to start being independent in remembering their homework or revisions. It’s a LEARNING PROCESS.
Do you think its fair for a good teacher to be pin down by selfish attitudes and un-called for remarks that is not even linked to the child’s development. -
:goodpost: True, I'm also one who likes to receive updates and not all teachers are as ON. Had a on-the-ball FT in P1, who left after 2 semesters and after that I was always the one sending emails and like for 3-4, I get 1 from the teacher. My boy is now P4 and so far I've only met 2 such FTs and 2 such subject teachers. You'll miss them when you don't get them.

hi parents, i intend to let my boy go to MS Pri next year, my hub is an alumni member. Can i just check if we need to get the alumni dept to issue a letter to attach to the reg form when we reg our boy for Pri 1 in Jul?

I did not need to show my alumni letter. Since registration for alumni is separate from the general registration, they pretty much know what to do. -
