Int'l sch??? So yur DD1 is pretty much all grown up oredi??? :shock:My older daughter studied in international schools as we were overseas for 25 years. My younger one is going to be in the Singapore school system. I personally feel that children here are pushed to 'grow up' way too early in life. It's like they have to 'go to office' at an early age :(. Sad, but true.
At this stage, I am just putting the tools in place for my younger daughter and then see how she copes in school. I don't want my child to be an unhappy kid. I just want her to be a kid :). She knows that I am always there when she needs me - be it for play or for studies. I adjust my working hours to suit her timing for play and studies.
I guess we parents are all the same - we do what and all that we can for our kids. Bottomline, we just want to see smiles on their faces.

I agree wif wat u say abt our Ed sys. I can't deny the fact I was oso in some ways \"pressured\" to help my kids do better in sch. If given a choice, i will rather leave everythg to the sch teachers & juz teach my kids the day to day things without somehow linking them back to their sch curriculum.
But given such an environm in S'pore, we can't help but feel our kids will not feel happy if they R not capable in sch. Esp when some academic driven schs i noe of, has v insensitive teachers who will totally destroy our kids confidence & become unhappy (i noe it's an irony) when they do well.
Aft we learn our facts, we keep reminding ourselves that our kids cannot fall too far behind but we shld not push them so hard that they don't enjoy their childhood. Kids being kids, they need to have fun. Sometimes I juz find it a struggle to strike a balance. :frustrated:
Luckily my DH is someone who is v \"bo chap\" kind of person & juz wan our kids to play & play. He believes in learning abt fun things but not related to sch. eg. he teaches DD1 abt the planets thru drawing. The details of each planet is something which mummy doesn't even noe. :oops: It is not in their sch syllabus but to DH, most imp thg is DD enjoys it.
IM d more \"gan cheong\" one and insist DD muz finish homework b4 play (if there's time left, hee....). IM always worried that she will lose her confidence and become uninterested in studies. :scared:
So in a way, we complement each other whr teachings R concern.
I hope our kids will not blame us (not sure if it's for \"not pushing them hard enough\" or \"push them too hard\", hee....) wen they grow up and understand that our intentions is really for them 2b happy.

Is you DD2 about 3 years and 2 months young? Oh, if that is the case, I must tell you that I did not start my little girl at that age. At that age, we were just playing and playing, lots of conversations, watching suitable tv programs together, discussing about the characters on the movies or children's educational programs and we were dancing too :). Then, at the age of four and a half, I started her on the starfall.com (website) reading and from there, moved on to flashcards (which did not really look like cards, as I had printed the words from the computer, on normal A4 papers). And I treated it as a game right from the start. However, kids being kids, sometimes, they want a change of 'activities' and so, I think of news ways and activities to suit her, but still keeping the teaching syllabus the same. Sometimes we use the whiteboard. Yes, seems like lots of work isn't it? The truth is - it is! :).
Dearie, do not despair, if your DD2 is only about 3years and 2 months young, relax.... . Just enjoy your DD2, singing, dancing, playing, talking, etc. Have activities that make both you and your DD2 laugh alot, build up a really strong bond so that when the stressful time of 'teaching' them during the school years comes, you and your DD2 will have a solid emotional bank to make withdrawals from when needed. I have seen too many parents/children relationships turn sour because of 'studies'.

However, I have tried playing with my DD2 alphabet flash cards last time and she simply not interested. Realised that she will tend to avoid if is something that she doesn't know. She will just simply walk away and don't want to play
Recognising words seems to be a rather hard for her. Till now she still can't recognise a single word.

We LOVE starfall!!!both DD1 and DD2 simply adore it!!!It's really good and came in handy as I was homeschooling the gals then.Like you I made flashcards,letter stencils,and if they got bored we learn through lots of games....fun for them but quite exhausting making materials while they sleep!!!our home has a corner that resembles a school and we call it our office
My gal really enjoyed e-learning today..we started at 8am after breakfast and finish at around 11.30..then off to lucky plaza for lunch and went to tangs for shopping!!! :lol: :lol:
Rushed to pick DD2 and DS1 after that!!!

aiyo, fr this e-learning, realise DD is pretty weak in Maths (yes, surprise cos thot MT is more diff for her). Pretty upset cos DH has been coaching her for Maths. But knowing DH, I shld not b surprise. :x He will juz do the bare min & will not bother to explain how the relations of the nos. works. In the past years, we only had 1 e-learning day per year...during the Parents & Teachers Meeting in May. This year is the first time we are having it in Feb. Heard from DD1 that the teachers were all having a meeting today. I suspect we'll have another e-learning day in May again as all teachers will be meeting the parents & the kids get to stay at home and do e-learning.
Yes, yes, you can log on to http://www.lead.com.sg and http://www.problemsums.com and do work anytime. I agree these websites are very good practice for the kids, and the best part is, it's fun. Maybe when your DD & DH are free, they can log on to practice some maths. You'll be amazed at how fast kids learn. With http://www.problemsums.com, there's a ranking chart so it motivates the child to want to do more as they see their names move up the chart. :rahrah:
BTW, hope your DH survive the :nunchuk: session...haha.. -

Glad to hear that your DD enjoyed her e-learning day. We also went out shopping after e-learning. It was a luxury for my DDs as they are both in different sessions so we don't usually get a chance to go out shopping together on a weekday afternoon. Usually, shopping is on weekends, and we have to battle the crowd. Today was wonderful....no crowd. Ya, we really should have more e-learning days huh? :evil: -
