Hi everyone,
Does anyone know how schools grade their students? How come some schools have got Foundation English or Foundation Chinese and how does one get into the different levels?
How are students from different categories 'grouped' when it comes to admission into Secondary Schools?
Thanks for your help!

My gal gotten back her report book. Tsk. Teacher commented she needs to focus during lesson. See told u I have a dreamer here.. tsk.
Hi autumn82,
Guess it's not uncommon for kids to lose focus in class sometimes, ya.....New environment and lots of other more interesting distractions in class....keke. DD2 always comes home and reports to me about how pretty her teachers' clothes are in great details. I sometimes wonder if she pays attention to her teacher or busy looking at her teachers' clothes... :slapshead:

Hi funkymonkey,Hi tinkerbelle,
actually we are already exempted from MT no need to do exams etc...
i just thought that it'll be good for my gal to sit in and listen during MT class if the teacher doesn't mind...
She was like i mentioned; kinda cold...and maybe like you said,i should give her a chance.....I actually spoke to the AED and she agreed to sit in with my gal during MT lesson in Term 2 onwards till my gal is familiar and no longer afraid of the teacher.......good idea
huh?
Her other subjects are at the \"Good\" range ,we got the report book just now...but my gal sooooo scared whenever i mention MT teacher...she doesn't even want to enter the MT classroom..i think we have to wait and see...if in term 2 ...by second week she still cannot feel comfortable in the MT classroom without AED then we'll forget about the whole thing
Its really sad coz my gal wants to learn and is a keen learner, even if she is a slow learner
Thanks so much!!!
:lovesite: :thankyou: :thankyou:
Excellent idea that the AED is willing to sit in with your DD for MT class till she's used to her new teacher. I must admit the AED is very supportive and understanding. Given the phobia your DD has with anything MT, sounds like a good idea to take things slowly. Test the temperature first then jump into the pool...keke. Wish your DD all the best with her trial sessions when sch reopens. Hope she can \"melt\" her MT teacher's coldness.
Like you mentioned, if your DD still doesn't feel at ease by end of week 2, then can abandon the idea. :xedfingers:
Wow...your DD did well for her report book. :ugogirl:
Definitely deserves the reward & shopping trip. -

Hi Tinkerbelle,
Hi jesyeo,Tinkerbelle:
She only brought back the 2 Maths test and she told me her score for Chinese paper but not the English paper yet.
Aiyoh my DD very careless, she missed out 1 of the Maths Question. Hope she will be more careful in future.
Not to worry....Luckily, it's only 1 question. If it's any consolation, CA1 is not as heavily weighted as SA2. Take this as a learning experience for your DD. I'm sure she won't forget this too quickly and will be more careful next time.
in fact CA1 has 0% weightage as explained during the last PTM.
So jesyeo, no worries. Take it as an experience. My DD is oso v careless but tis time round I muz say, she did well. :D
Hi cantbearit2,
Thanks...good that CA1 has no weightage for P1. Honeymoon period....at least the sch gives them time to get used to pri sch & the idea of tests & exams.
:congrats: to your DD for doing well. :ugogirl: -
Gin:
Hi Gin,Hi everyone,
Does anyone know how schools grade their students? How come some schools have got Foundation English or Foundation Chinese and how does one get into the different levels?
Thanks for your help!
All pri sch have Foundation classes now but it only starts in P5. In line with MOE's initiative, Subject-based banding have since replaced EM3 stream in 2008. Based on the child's P4 results of each subject, the sch will recommend the level (Standard or Foundation) your child should take for each subject in P5.
Majority of the students will go on to do Standard levels for all subjects. However, students who are weaker in any subjects will be recommended to take their weaker subjects at Foundation levels and for subjects they are stonger in at Standard levels. In other words, the student can have a mix of standard and foundation subjects. To quote an example, if the student is weak in 3 core subjects but is good in MT, the student can take all 3 core subjects at Foundation levels and take MT at the Standard level. That way, students who are weak in any subject can learn at a pace that is more suited to their needs in the Foundation level and at the same time, have the opportunity to stretch his/her potential in the subjects they excel in at the standard level.Gin:
Students taking subjects at standard levels will progress to \"Express\" or \"Normal (Academic)\" streams in sec sch based on their PSLE scores. Previously, EM3 student tend to move on to Normal (Technical) but with Subject-banding, Foundation level students who are taking some subjects at Standard levels may have a chance to take these subjects at standard levels at sec sch.How are students from different categories 'grouped' when it comes to admission into Secondary Schools?
Hope my explanation helps. -
