Pari, yes, I am thinking hard about how to how to make my girl more responsible for her own studies. :scratchhead: Nowadays, the spelling and ting xie for K2, I'm always the one telling her its time to study. Maybe I should just tell her I expect you to study on your own, and see what happens
Or is she too young for me to expect so much? :nailbite:
I agree michmyms...it is like 2 way road.....it is dufficult to decide what is right way
i think we have to keep trying few tactics with them and see what works.. :nailbite:

Pari:
Yeah Pari. Very often, I would try out something on my girl to find out that it doesn't work, then have to use another method to motivate her. My girl is the type who likes get answers correct so that she can have stars to go with it. So nowadays whatever I teach her at home, I will mark like the teacher with a red pen and give her stars so that she gets motivated. Or I will pretend to the student, and tell her she has to \"teach\" me cos mummy doesn't know ... need ideas for all kinds of different tricks :idea:michyms:

Yes phoenix, the classrooms have lockers for the gals to put their belongings. That way, their bags won't be too heavy.Tinkerbelle:
Hi,
Can anyone share if there are lockers or cupboards in class available for the P1 children to leave behind their files or textbooks in school like some of the dingle session schools?
Thanks
Thanks Tinkerbelle. Would you know the size of each locker? Is it big enough to hold all the textbooks? I was thinking of getting 1 set each for school and home so that my DD won't need to lug them back and forth.
Hi phoenix,
keke...I dunno the exact dimensions but the lockers are big enough to put all your textbooks plus art block etc.
So you mean you're planning to buy 1 more set of maths and MT textbook? Social studies, Health & CME textbooks are thin so not heavy.
Only the CASCO Primay English workbook is a bit heavy. -
michyms:
You are welcome, michyms. Ya, definitely P5 is still a long way for you....keke.
Tinkerbelle, thank you so much for the clarification. P5 is a long way off, so now my job is to ensure she has a good foundation and enjoys the language, and if she given that option for HMT, we can re-look at that againTinkerbelle:
Hi michyms,
All students who take up HMTL will have to sit for 2 exams.....1 for normal chinese and 1 for HMTL.
Students who sit for PSLE - HMTL will not have a score for that subject..... they'll get a grade instead. A 'Pass' will equate to 1 mark, a 'Merit' 2 marks and a 'Distinction' 3 marks. Only if your child opts for a SAP sch like St. Nic, NYGH, will the marks for the respective grade attained be added to the child's T-score.
For example, if your DD scores 260 and attains a 'Merit' for HMTL, 2 additional marks will be added to her 260 if she applies for a SAP sch, making her score 262. However, on her PSLE cert, only 260 and 'Merit' for HMTL will be reflected.

Yes, the main thing is to get your DD interested in the Chinese culture & language. A good foundation is paramount.
If your DD shows an interest & appitude in Chinese, there's also the opportunity to be selected for a 1-week Immersion Programme in Beijing in P5. -
michyms:
Yes, there's also a class for the gals who are weaker in their Chinese. Majority of the gals will be streamed into standard Chinese classes. Those gals in the 'weaker' & 'top' classes will then go to another class for MT lessons and join their form class for the other core subjects.
Tinkerbelle, I also read somewhere that the weaker ones are also taken out and will form their own chinese class so as to go slower... and after 1 term, they will be \"streamed\" based on their HYPY? Since they are not doing anything else, how to determine standards?Tinkerbelle:
Hi jnemummy,
Some schs do start their students on HMTL from P1, but unfortunately, MCS is not one of them. I agree with you that it would be nice to have the option to choose to expose the gals to HMTL from young.... that way, they won't resist the language as much when they get to upper primary.
In MCS, the P1 gals are streamed (for MT only) after 1 term. Those who excel in MT will be allocated to the top chinese class in Term 2 where they will be further stretched & challenged. There are 3 sections for each chapter in the Chinese textbook. Gals taking standard chinese will only touch on the first 2 sections but gals in the top chinese class will get to do the third section as well (even though the 3rd section is not examinable). In this way, gals who show appitude for Chinese will have a chance to further develop their potential.
Not to worry, MCS does conduct Civics & Moral Education (CME) in the child's MT language.
Ya, streaming after 1 term for P1 Chinese only started this year. Last year, for DD2's cohort, streaming was only done after Term 2. The gals are streamed based on a HYPY test about Week 7-8 in term 1. In addition, the teachers will also be monitoring their daily work in class and their oral skills to determine if the gals are suitable for accelerated learning in MT. -

Tinkerbelle, you're a gem!
We were planning to buy 2 sets of all the textbooks but based on your kind information, it looks like we may not need to do so. Do we need to buy a lock for the locker?
Thanks so much again for your patient and generous sharing with us newbies. :salute: -

No need to buy a lock for locker. The gals' lockers are actually horizontal pigeon holes (only much bigger) within one big cupboard with a door. The teacher will assign someone to lock the door of the cupboard at the end of the day. During lessons, the door is left unlocked. -
Tinkerbelle, your sharing is truly appreciated by me too! U are really the MCS guru :thankyou:
