Were the words used totally inappropriate and was the compo written totally out of context? With my DD I have the opposite problem. She will at times get fixated with certain words or phrases and will try by all means to use them, even if they do not properly convey what she wants to say. If overall, the compo is grammatically correct, not out of point, and has a good flow, using interesting phrases and better vocab and phrases can be incorporated slowly.i am extremely disappointed & feel helpless with my P3 boy.
He is extremely stubborn n bad learning attitude. We spent whole wkend to revise chinese n english compo with him.At the end, he told me he didn't follow the tactics n didn't use any phrases which we n tutors taught him. Instead,he used some other words which we didn't teach him. For e.g. he used \"declared\" to replace \"said\"....yet,he doesn't even know what does it mean.
even in maths, he refused to follow the shorter methods we teach him, or using any modeling. I've scolded, beaten, punished, soft talked....none of this works.
Now,i've stopped teaching.Let him fail his oral since he will not follow what will be taught.
As for Math, again, take a step back. Is the method he is using accepted by the school? At the end of the day, does it allow him to show his workings correctly and does he have a good grasp of the concepts tested? If he does, why insist on him using a particular method if he is more confident with what he is using now? -

I think he's trying and I view it as more of work in progress.
:thankyou: For compo, i cut n pasted all the words/sentences which he has learnt thru tuition or tingxie.Times running out,so I taught him the words/phrases which he has learnt b4 than introducing new ones for him.Yet,he chose declared. He told me \"Said\"=\"declared\",he saw this word from creative writing book.
What's most amusing,he used the word:\"listen at side of ear\".I asked him where he learnt this sentence. He said he converted Chinese idioms(耳边风) to English idioms.I asked him,why can't u used \"turn into deaf ears\" which i taught u b4?? He said,\"must be creative\" He said sometx u told me i could convert the words from chinese to english.I said, yes, but not all words.
:imdrowning: :?: :imdrowning: :?:
If you cut and paste, he might not get the context. I'm not sure how much you cut so I'm guessing here. He might need a bit more context to understand how the phrases can be used.
He's not exactly wrong is explaining that said = declared, for him he probably just view the word as alternative to use when writing direct speech or to indicate a character is speaking. You can take this opportunity to explain the differences and how the tone of speech would be like. When we are reading, and there are direct speech parts, I will ask dd1 to act how it should be spoken? This is to let her get the idea that words such as ask, said, questioned, shouted, screamed, muttered have different tones and uses.
I know the above cannot be used when time is short and stress level is high. But maybe will give you some ideas or help you to think of your own, now that the test is over and stress level is reduced.
As for noisy class environment, it's not easy to tune out the noises and concentrate at what the tr is trying to teach. If class management is weak, he will need external help. -
:thankyou: thanks for all ur advices
i included the examples for the phrases. Both the tutor n me went thru the phrases with him.
Perhaps he nid more practise. He dislikes writing english compo. It was a struggle to get him to start writing.Even he is willing,he wanna see the \"answer\" for compo 1st.
He is ok with chinese compo writing, coz he attends the chinese writing tuition. -

i see some lights here. I think i was wronged to reprimand of using the wrong word. U r right, work in progress...I think i might hv given him too much info. The word:\"declared\" was shown under as replacement word for \"said\" in one of reference books.
i'll tell him that i am glad u shld new words but make sure not to use word that u r not familiar with. He did use the word \"reprimanded\"correctly.
the teacher had since re-arranged his seating. -
For maths test,he could hv scored full mark if not becoz of careless mistake :frustrated:
Knowing he is very careless, we always encourage him to label the bars.I also asked him to underline the key words,so he won't make careless mistakes.
For e.g. Mary has 3 apples. She has 6 times more than Tim.
He didn't label the two bars(modeling) which he drew.
He mixed up the bars(the bar belonged to Tim went to Mary) -

My dd1 doesn't like to show workings. I only understand why after I asked her. Then I have to explain why it's required. -

He said,\"tired\".My DH said he is lazy. He dislikes drawing models.not to mention label.

relax, most kids are like that.Esp. boys.My son used to be like that.Still he doesn't label it at home. But slowly he overcomed the careless mistakes.Still have.BTW my son in P5.Today I ask him to study more, he just give up.He said, he can't do the maths in the late night (8:30pm) and told he would do in the morning. He cannot work for long time with break.
some parents shared in the P3 Maths Q&A thread last year.

My DS is the opposite of your son. She is ok with Eng Compo (but still have to work hard on the sequence and flow), she is totally 'gone case' in Chinese Compo. Simply can't understand what she is writing.:thankyou: thanks for all ur advices

She just merely translate the Eng phrases into Chinese phrases directly! Eg mother's advice fell on deaf ears can be written to 妈妈的劝告掉进耳聋。 :slapshead: so I told her to just memorise Chinese phrases. I know it's not an effective way of learning but I'm left with no choice.
have sent her for Chinese tuition but not much improvement. She doesn't listen much when I teach, maybe I nag her too much and she become Bo-chap :boogie: anybody can help to introduce a passionate Chinese tutor to help her. She is in P5 this yr and I'm so worry her Chinese will pull her overall score down.

i feel getting the right tutor is crucial. I am amazed with TheAnswer suggestions. My ds’s english tutor keeps feeding him creative phrases yet he couldn’t even able to write a good flow of compo with proper grammar n sentence structure.
while i highlighted to her several times that a good foundation of grammar n sentence structure r impt, she seems to disagree n comment these could be taught along the way.
Hence, she keeps teaching him compo without building his foundation. My DH said this doesn’t look the right way to teach.
I’ve to tidy up the big mess(files, papers, books)that she left on the desk.I’ve to re-organize the teaching materials she gave to my DH n put it in a proper order n file.
Don’t know how many times I hv shown her on exam schedule n syllabus.Perhaps she has too many students so she couldn’t remember,or she simply doesn’t hv commitment.
Yet,i’ve to put up on her until i find a proper tuition centre, after SA1…
