Moonee, I didn’t know we can re-contract maid’s salary. I thot eveything must follow contract set by agency. Maids these days are very streetsmart, even the fresh ones, and they know their rights and have no qualms to threaten complains to MOM if we don’t follow contract.

My last maid (taken her in Aug 2010) was a philipino and she was x singapore at $360. But she was so lazy I had to send her home.

Yes angelight, the maids are now very streetsmart. They know that they can start off with a high salary but question is can they meet with the demands of the employer and duties. My past agent told me tat there are quite a few employers that re-adjust the salary when the maid goes to their homes, his concern is more with the loan and his agreement serves as a guide line for both parties but finally if the employer and maid agree to a lower salary he leaves it to them to negotiate and would gladly amend the contract if the employer wants him to. Some employers come out with a new contract on their own. Personally, I have taken maids at the price tht the agent recommended but when I complained that they could not perform and i was being overcharge, the agent re-adjusted the salary lower. I guess its more effective than sending her back for a transfer or back home.

Good idea.. Will keep that in mind when I employ new maid... Was shocked to see Fresh burmese asking for 400 and the ex Singapore ones asking for 500... :faint:

Fresh burmese asking or their agent? the burmese have been quite contented with 320 in the past and I was paying 340. Its the agent thats exploiting due to the shortage of other nationalities, I notice alot of agents start at 400 today, just bcos agents follow the prices other agents quote. Not becos the maids are of quality. … I have to date, seen only one mynmar worth her price at 340 in 2010. Just too bad she stole my mums diamond earring.

Theres always room for bargaining, I feel communication is very important and the village girls dont speak or understand english. Very frustrating to teach someone that hardly understand english and takes a long time to train. Even after training they wont listen, very stubborn. Their mindset is very different and they tend to do things that surprises me.
i wont pay such a high salary for one that cant perform, might as well wait for the other nationalities n just use the burmese temporarily, after all little help is better than no help at all

It’s shocking how expensive the Burmese maids are becoming! I agree totally that they are quite out of this world. Super difficult to train 'cos super stubborn and like what Moonee said…"they tend to do things that surprises me"…sometimes even shocking things! They are also quite rude. For $100 more…they’ll have difficulty finding jobs if not for the shortage of Indo and Philippinos.

Moonee, your maid agency not bad leh, allows you to re-adjust the maid's salary and contract. Most agents would rather transfer the maids cos they get a cut each time a maid is transferred to another employer. Some even tell their maids to ask employer for transfer if they not happy. That's why some maids will dare to ask to go back to agent (for transfer) if they not happy over the slightest thing.

I think all agents will prefer to stick to the contrract then to revise the pay, but so far two that I had dealings with didnt mind. My current maid knows where she stands and the agent told me to decide myself when I should pay her 20 bucks as she came a week b4 the end of the month, so if I decide to keep her I dont need to ask him to endose the contract should I adjust her salary.

What can the agents do if the maid wants to work on and the employer and maid agree to a small adjustment. The same goes for an increment, I didnt tell my agent when i increased my filipina after her third month neither did we change the contract. I guess if the loan is not affected they hv nothing much to say.

Anyone knows which agent or agency is good for Burmese maids? My friend told me they are cheaper and easier to train. Not sure if it is true though.
