My ex-maid 4 years with me, 2 years with my extended family - no off days. Only asked once if her sister can come and visit her. Sister came and borrowed money from her, thereafter she did not want meet her sister anymore.

None of my subsequent maids wanted to go out either. They did not want to call home too. When they left with their SGD 5-figure savings equivalent, they thanked us profusely for not allowing them to go out.

Those whose objective here is to better their life are happy not to go out. Know some maids who had no land, house or business even though they had been here for many years.
Those who work for many years but end up with no assets are often those who are too weak to say \"No\" to the blood-sucking relatives.

Or iphone 5, telephone bills, purchases to make themselves pretty. My neighbour’s maid had braces done to her teeth. Some of the maids at my place even travel in taxis on their off days.

Personally, I think really up to luck when hiring maids no matter from which country.

My bro recently got a burmese maid, over the week I see she is quiet ok, doing housework, just very slow, however, if you correct her, she will listen and do.

no problem, just standard of english is not there.

Yes, hygiene wise, need to teach.

But overall, she's ok and willing to work.

Cross my finger, hope she is the right one.

I have gotten filippo and Indo maid before think not very good with luck, stealing, dishonest.

So I guess when they come and work with us then we can really see. plus now salary so so exp for both (F and I) maid.. some really not up to the standard to come, just come to play..

so sien of found one over and over.. Govt should provide us (employer) .. with all the news ruling... salary increase etc... :stompfeet:

anyway, good luck to all whose looking for maids.. 🙂

Hi matrix 0405, you are right. Need pay about $3k upfront for them, to be deducted over the months. Am not sure if this is standard but this had been the requirement for the 2 agencies which I selected my maid from recently. Full refund of all fee for one cos maid still cannot get passport after 3 months.

This is still the 'old' scheme. The maid still pay her own loan.

If Eng standard not there, how to communicate ? For Indon, at least can speak simple Malay.

The other thing is, how long on average does it take to employ a Burmese maid?

I selected maid 1 in June but passport not approved even by August/September. Full refund from agency. They did offer me alternative - the passport ready maids but none selected. Select maid 2 from another agency in August/September and passport ready only in October. Can only come in December. Need maid urgently due to upcoming school holidays so choose another one with passport. Will transfer existing maid out when the chosen maid comes.

Mine can barely understand English so everything is through gesticulations and demonstrations. There are some experienced Burmese maids with higher English standard but they will want off-days and handphones and show black-face.

Vary amongst individuals, some 6 months, some more than 12 months based on feedback from my circle.

I interviewed a Burmese maid...sister in law of this maid working for my friend. That Burmese maid claimed she worked one month and requested change of employer bcos she had to cook for family of 6. My brother showed us bio data of some Burmese maids...all want 1 off day and $400.
Actually, getting a maid is really about luck. Thanks for info.

Depends on which local agent the Singapore agency works with. The ones I go to asking $420-$440 without off-days.

My ex-maid told me her handphone was confiscated by the local agent so she came to Singapore without handphone. Same for all girls coming in via this agent. But agree it is really about luck. I look forward to the day I can be without maids. Now that kids are older, they have become more of a burden as their value-add is diminishing.
