Is there any JC that has mid-year exam during May in the current system? Lessons only start in March, think hardly worthwhile to set an exam in May. Moving forward, my guess is the first real assessments will still be after June holiday, but maybe instead of full paper for each subject, it may be scaled down to a shorter paper, but will still test all topics taught from Mar to May. Let's see..

H2 Physics subject Total say,
5 topics have already been taught, from
(2 February to May) 2024,
Why ?
Because the JAE students, after O level joined your child (RGS daughter or RI son) in Raffles Institution
wef 2 Feb 2024,
then,
RI will test only 2 Physics topics, instead of 5 that had been taught.
So, means
still got \"mini, byte sized test\" in May (mid year)
What does this mean, then?
the other remaining 3 Physics topics which were not tested during mid year -
you study yourself, on your own. -

That's what I thought too. But it doesn't seem like so. There is still marking standard and accepted answers, how marks are awarded. Maybe thats how it is w lower level. Teacher to students ratio is too low. One can explain their answers with justifications, their own perspective, more in class but not in exam.
In fact Lit has no definite answer? but must hv personal response, & quote your evidence closely fm the text. While I agree to a certain extent that Lit is marked very subjective as it is not so straight forward like Math & Science, students must read the text very very critically & understand what's the authors trying to convey their hidden messages fm the text. As long as the students sit down & read critically & fully immersed the text, he/she will be able to score pretty fast ,& well. Previously dd tends to go shortcut, only flip to certain pages & didnt read critically the whole text, her CT/BT/Promo the most score B. Leading to Prelim, I forced her to read the whole text fm beginning to end, she finally got a decent A in the Prelim. So I must say students opt for Lit as H2 subject must be sensitive to the choice of words used to convey, & most importantly must totally understand more deeper meaning of the whole context that the author wants to convey. -

While I sympathise with these answers (and one of my kids would have had great fun too), with my \"teacher\" hat on, I would have had to impress upon my kids that CONTEXT is important, not just comprehension of words. In working life, I'm sure we all know that understanding what the boss means is more important than what he actually says. Same in married life, actually!

Teachers are not without humour - I wouldn't be surprised if the teacher had a good laugh, and probably showed the answer to others too! But for the purposes of schoolwork, he/she has to demand the expected answer. -

Apparently the class had just been taught about even and odd numbers.
The answer to me is not wrong and is relevant to maths too. But teacher marked it wrong and never speak to the kid. Hence, i think only parents who are involved will be able explain further to the kid.
To me, there is no concern at all to lose this type of 1 point. The kid consistently get above 90 until PSLE. Still getting high marks in sec sch. But u know why the kid will never get full marks even though it is maths. Kids with minds of their own... Back then parents just told the kid, this type, is not a fault and they wouldn't be bothered.
Bringing this up since the discussion was abt standard answers and sensitivity to choice of words.
The qn could have phrased
Find out the difference of x from y.
To subtract x from y.
Etc.

In \"Math-speak\", \"difference\" always refers to subtraction, as far as I recall. Similarly, \"sum\", \"product\" and \"quotient\" for the other operators.

If a young child gives a \"spot the difference\" answer rather than a \"Maths-speak\" answer, I would probably praise him for realising that the question can be interpreted in more than one way, but point to the fact that it was a Maths question, and therefore should be interpreted in \"Maths-speak\". Learning which meaning to apply in various contexts is part of growing up. In fact, an aspect of the disability in autism is the inability (though some can be taught and can improve) to take things literally without considering context.
And if it's an older child who's trying to be cheeky, then probably a telling-off might be in order. -
