I Can Read - Discussion
-
Hi mummies,
I just my 3 yrs 10mth old girl to the ICR assessment and she will b placed in ICR level. The teacher said she has the blending n reading ability of a 5 yrs old. However, after reading the post here, i am worried about whether the teacher will spent time guiding her or concentrate on the k2 n p1 students only. I was given a one time free trial to see whether can she adapt to the class as the admin gal doesn’t believe she can handle ICR level even though the teacher who assessed her say she is amazing good. Do u think I should let her join the class? One part of me wants her to join as I know she will pick up the skill v fast, but I am worried she will b bullied or left alone in class. Please give my some advice. Thanks -
Hi piglet and calf,
Your girl is v advanced to be offered the ICR prog at this age! Your concerns about the age gap between classmates and her is valid. However it is very much dependent on the behavior of the students and how the teacher conducts the class. Why not let your girl go for the free trial first and see if she's comfortable with it.
Can your girl write well now? Spelling is required at the ICR level.

Hi kat78,
Which stage is your DD in now? The TCS and PRP is not so structured as each student will be at different levels of competency. There will be some phonics activities in class which is given according to their competency. They do have some play (if u notice the kitchen set in the classroom). You may wish to speak with the teacher to find out the progress of your DD and what skills she’ll require to go to next level. -
Hi all, my son is currently in the ICR programme (book 6).
I do not know if he should continue ICR when he is in P1 next year.
Is next level following the MOE syllabus? Can any parents advise?
Thanks. -
genmai,
Thanks. I will bringing her down for the free trial session.
My gal can write in sentences and spell some basic sight words and simple words using phonics.
Actually, my main purpose of letting her attending the class is because I want her to learn phonics from a professional so as to help her further in her reading and spelling in the future. I am teaching her at the moment but i realise that certain sound, i can do it well. I dont want to affect her by teaching her the wrong sound.
I just hope that after i sign up, she will not be left alone in class while the teacher concentrate on the 5 to 6 years old children.
Can i check is the ICR program a one year course from book 1 to 6? -
Hi piglet and calf,
Wow! Your girl is indeed very advance to be able to write in sentences so young. I have the same thoughts as you when I put my DDs in I Can Read. They are comprehensive in teaching the phonic rules. An added bonus is the naive speaker teacher which I find is important when coaching diction. The teacher will also teach them how to read a passage with different tonation. My DD can read aloud better than me now!
You may wish to highlight your concerns to the teacher and see if he/she can address them. Go for a teacher you’re comfortable with.
Yes books 1-6 take 1 year to complete. -
genmai,
thanks alot.
I only need someone to help me out in the phonic rules and the exact way to read the word as i find it pretty difficult to guide her when sea and see sound the same to me. Cos I can guide her in the rest like comprehension, sentence writing etc. I will put her for one year to complete the course then. Shall talk to the teacher about my concern.
thanks for answering my question. -
Dear Parents,
I intended to send my daughter to attend the I can read programme (prelimenary) at Kovan centre. She is very shy. Would any of the parents be able to recommend a teacher? Thank you. -
my child used to study there. the service was good and she improved after a semester. however she is older now so she goes by private tutoring. worth your try.
