Ah ha, that's it! I think you hit the nail on the head about the black sauce/ketchap being a country/cultural thing! This friend that I was chatting with is also a Msian, no wonder she's all for the black sauce version and me being the true blue Singaporean am all for the ketchap version! :lol:I think this black / ketchup sauce is a country/cultural thingy??
DH is Msian and loves his wanton mee with black sauce. Says that's what he grew up with. Me, good ole' Spore girl (Hurray Singapura... :rahrah: ) loves my wanton mee with ketchup sauce.schweppes:
:rotflmao: so in the end, which version you wanted and did you manage to get the version you wanted? And speaking of wanton mee, we went to this wanton mee stall at Tembeling Road for lunch yesterday and there was this confusion with the hawker as to whether they have it in black, ketchup or plain. :stupid:
It doesn't help that DH and my Mandarin is so bad, and the hawker's assistant from PRC. So u can imagine the sight!! Hands gesticulating to make ourselves understood. Sigh...
Can't stand those PRC assistants at hawker stalls!

DH took Malay as 2nd lang when he was in school, I'm a true-blue Peranakan, brought up by my grandparents who spoke Malay, English and Hokkien - so our Mandarin quite hopeless.
In the end, like one chicken and duck talking :faint: , we managed to get our orders right. 1 wanton mian \"hei\", 2 wanton mian \"ketchup\" and 1 mee pok \"ketchup\".
