Ha ha, I have difficulty getting him out of the country. He is doing his uni locally. I wanted him to go overseas to do a term or two of exchange but I think he got used to me washing his laundry and cook for him. We decided to fire our two maids following all those strange reports and their own strange behaviors. (Seeing men at night...)karmeleon and 2ppaamm,
:salute: to you both for boosting the declining birthrate, and in
2ppaamm's case, provided your kid comes back eventually.
Yep, declining birthrate, but two people holding the fort is not good enough. You can join us! -
karmeleon:
Did I saw I cope?!!!! Wah, your kids are amazing! Mine are pretty much run-of-the-mill, mischevious, playful, not highly-exceptional. haha.
Not exceptional lah, I just don't believe there's only one route to success. I believe my ordinary kids can do extraordinary things. So can yours. For one thing, I HATE PSLE and this stupid streaming and stress at 12 years old :x , when is this system going to be scraped?????
Poor kids, one round after another of agony, all for getting into good schools. Fed up!!! They should be enjoying their learning process, having fun, GROWING UP, and playing and not worry about DSA, T-scores, Interviews, haSt, COP, Appeals.
What chance does a bright 12-year old have if he/she is without an educated/informed parent? None! :!: -
Thanks to everyone who have contributed to the PSLE COP in this thread. Just wondering if there are any more COPs coming in? If there are, please keep them coming and I will update accordingly.
Seems like this thread has gone a bit OT, advice about this and that issue etc, not relating to PSLE COP. I hope to keep it neat as the title suggests, PSLE COP. Sorry, but a bit tiring on my part to be scrolling through the pages and finding more OT topics than PSLE COPs. -

Oops, I assumed he's out of the country. Yr 15 yo must be the youngest in the U, eh? Genes of the mum or dad? Just curious. Coz I read somewhere that the intelligence genes come from the mum.

Join you in pro-creation? Naah, no way, jose! As you said in yr post, the education system here *&(%*^$. Nuff said.2ppaamm:
Exactly, no chance at all. It's a jungle out there..all fighting for survival..some with the help of parents...but mostly flying solo. What chance does a bright 12-year old have if he/she is without an educated/informed parent? None! :!:

He is a whole 7 years younger. Maybe got a bit of genes for passion. Better shift out of this topic. This is the COP track... maybe start another track on alternative to Singapore education system. I have a whole lot of tricks to share that there are alternatives to the Singapore system, though I have yet figured a way out of the PSLE, and survive till they reach about 14 to go to uni. Hi 2ppaamm, I think that is a very good idea, that way, we can keep this thread as neat as it was meant to be, specifically for COP 2009! Thanks.

Hi micko07,
I'm surprised that NYGH's COP has remained the same. Colour me very surprised. Not a bad thing though.
With all due respect, I would like to scrap affiliation. Or at least up the minimum score to 255. It's totally unfair to students who are not from NYPS and according to statistics (Mean 260, Median 259), most students are there simply because they cannot make it to a school of similar standing (Eg RGS) with their scores. I don't see the point in lowering the entry score by a good 13 points. If you must, keep it within 10 points.
There, rant over. Sorry guys!
NYGH is not the only popular school with affiliation to a primary school. While it is indeed fortunate for students of NYPS who can make it to NYGH due to affiliation, they too have to go through the same IP programme. If they are not up to standard, they will not be able to cope at NYGH. A T-score of 250 has already put one at the top 10% of the nation according to Mdm. Heng, ex-principal of NYPS. Perhaps you're thinking that without the affiliation, NYGH's COP would be higher? Indeed, I believe it's the lesser number of vacancies available for admission through Central Posting (non-affiliation) that has caused the COP to be what it has been through the years. Actually, there is a chain effect. If the COP is not close to that of RGS, the popularity of the school may in turn suffer.
To me, NYGH is a very good school, as good as RGS. In fact, some of my family members are alumni of the school as well as of HCI (ex-HCJC). However, both schools have their 'strengths' & 'weaknesses' in different areas - really depends on what one is looking for.
I sent my daughter to NYPS with no knowledge of the affiliation advantage to NYGH. I only learnt of it when she was in P5.
Maybe you should start planning for your own daughter (in future) to get into NYPS so that she too can enjoy the affiliation advantage?
Merry Christmas! -
Anybody receive news of appeal from HCI?
-
VitoRelax:
Hi harini, VitoRelax, I didn't appeal to NJC eventually but went to DHS on 22nd afternoon to appeal. We received good news fm them yesterday while we were holidaying in Malacca. However, I also appealed to HCI last week before the posting results & still waiting for them to reply. Harini, you're right, that's a nice problem to have. Now I in a dilemma cos' need to sign the letter of offer at DHS 2moro but I still hope to receive gd news fm HCI. My DH said I very greedy leh. Think I will try calling HCI 2moro see got any news or not.Yes, agreed with harini. Don't let this affect you. I just spoke to someone in NJC who happened to pick up the phone. She sounds friendly leh ...
Just get on with the appeal ... sometimes persistence will work ...
All the best yah, hope you post your news here ...

Haha nah! I came from a school without affiliation (Ai Tong). It's virtually impossible to get into NYPS anyway, their volunteer list is really long I heard. If my daughter wants to go to NYGH, she should be getting there by virtue of her own effort and not count on affiliation as a safety blanket (my mother's rationale).
Hi micko07,

Oh no when I'm talking about scrapping affiliation I meant it as across the board (including other schools like SCGS and MGS + JC affiliation). NYGH's isn't that bad as compared to SC/MG, where the difference is something like 50+ points. Yikes. I just used NYGH as an example because I'm more familiar with it.
It's not so much the fact about whether the students are \"dragging down the standard of the school\" so to speak. What troubles me is that another academically stronger girl from a non-affiliated primary school cannot be admitted because that spot is given to an NYPS student with a lower T-score. Don't you feel that this is unfair to the students from non-affiliated primary schools? (granted, I was never in that position but I have friends who came close). On what grounds should they be subjected to such an uneven footing? Are we not in favour of meritocracy (well MOE ranks students according to their T-score in posting)?
I fail to see the rationale or the need for affiliation (sentimental reasons? cultural factors?). NYGH did a study years back, which echoes my sentiments:
http://www.nygh.moe.edu.sg/RnD/research_2004_02.htm
If NYPS students are only opting for NYGH as a \"2nd choice\", I do not see the need to lower our cut off so significantly. I would much rather that spot go to another student who did better at the PSLE. Even if that means our COP drops.
IMO, no academically-deserving student should be denied a place in NYGH simply because she's not from NYPS. Unless I can be convinced that affiliation is justifiable, I'm all for scrapping it. Sadly, I haven't found a reason that persuades me otherwise (I do try to be open-minded about it though).
RGS is a really good school (I should know, my mother tells me lots of stories from her sec school days!) and I hope your daughter enjoys herself!
Sec school is one of the best times in life!
I'm really sorry if you find this or my previous posts offensive. It is not targetted at anyone in particular and strictly my opinions. I apologise if it comes across as overtly aggressive.
