      hi tamarind,

So i guess it would be better to send my girl to the phonics class rather than i teach her myself n also not sure whether i pronounce correctly anot. The most i can teach 3 letters basic, e rest i m not too sure. i guess after e whole course, our kids can pronounce better than us?

btw i called up JE branch, the teacher will be a Malay teacher. how about urs at JW?
My girl attended in 2007, I think the teachers are probably different now.

A mommy PM me to ask about the books I read to my kids at around 1 year old.

I would like to share it with everyone here.

I chose books that my kids can \"play\" with, so they associate books with fun since they were babies. I didn't have the problem of babies not sitting still when I read to them, because there was something for them to do on very page and it kept them fascinated.

Here are some of the books that my kids loved very much before the age of 3.

We have 8 books in this series.
        http://www.amazon.com/This-Little-Bunny-Mini-Movers/dp/0764157396/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1259100571&sr=8-1
        http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51CV2N1WVQL._SL500_AA240_.jpg\">http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51XHA0NQE6L._SL500_AA240_.jpg\">
The baby can push or pull something on every page, very good for her itchy fingers. She does not turn the pages quickly, because there is something for her to do on every page. By using opposites and comparisons, the baby learns words very easily.
        http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_w1nyHWTEh94/R-msYHW-imI/AAAAAAAAAWk/ATOAJWivTzs/s400/h2.JPG\">

We have 4 books from the Poppy Cat series :
        http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/517BYK656FL._SL500_AA240_.jpg\">
Every page has a different texture, and the baby is encouraged to touch. Like this page, the cats' paw prints are actually sticky. On other pages, the baby can touch the cat's furry tummy.
        http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_w1nyHWTEh94/R-m0c3W-iuI/AAAAAAAAAXk/rLSB_rPFkGA/s400/paws.JPG\">

We have 5 books from the Busy Books series:
        http://www.amazon.com/Busy-Books-Airport-S/dp/140504795X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1259100957&sr=1-1

Here's a page in the book. They can turn the wheels to change the picture. There is something different on every page. Great for babies to develop their fine motor skills too.
        http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_w1nyHWTEh94/R-nHoXW-izI/AAAAAAAAAYM/OzjpWZqn4ko/s400/a1.JPG\">

2 books from the Wibbly Pig series. Every page has some flaps for the baby to lift.

Let's Go for a bear hunt. This book does not have anything fancy, but it is great for acting out. We have lots of fun pretending that we are running away from the bear.

Both of my kids love this series of rabbit books very much. We have 4 books in this series, my kids made me read to them over and over again countless times.

These pop up books are my boy's favourite. But I had to watch him carefully because he might tear the pop-ups.

Both my kids like this book :
        http://www.amazon.com/Wandas-Washing-Machine-Anna-Mcquinn/dp/1589257685/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1259107359&sr=1-1

There is actually a pop up washing machine inside. The kids can take out the pieces of \"clothes\", throw into the washing machine and pretend to wash.
        http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_w1nyHWTEh94/R-o9MHW-i5I/AAAAAAAAAY8/h9NGSDWvLPA/s400/w2.JPG\">

Also checkout the resources I used for teaching ABCs before the age of 3.
        http://tamarindphonics.blogspot.com/2009/10/first-step-teaching-b-c.html

Ideally parents should read books like the above to kids before 3 years old, to develop a love of reading. In fact, I only started to teach my kids to read when they were more than 3 years old.

Starting from 3 years old, parents should start to teach phonics :
        http://tamarindphonics.blogspot.com/2008/08/how-to-teach-phonics.html

The child should also start to read out loud using a good reader like the Peter and Jane series :
        http://tamarindphonics.blogspot.com/2008/12/key-words-with-ladybird.html

If parents can persist and let the child read out loud everyday, he can be reading Roald Dahl books by himself before the age of 5 !

Note: The ages I wrote above are general guidelines only. Some kids may be able to learn to read as young as 18 months old. Some kids may be ready to learn only at 4 or 5 years old, but don't worry, a child who starts later, will be able to learn much faster. But do make sure you start teaching before the age of 5.

              Tamarind,

              I need to ask you:

If a child can read independently, do you encourage a 4+ close to 5 year old to use dictionary on her own for words she doesnt know the meaning? If yes, which dictionaries do you recommend?

They are roving sellers babe. No fixed location.
Just open table and arrange all the books, then
they put up the eye-opening signs. 3 books for
                $5! Or 1 book @ $1! They'd sell used Phonics
readers, used novels and popular reads like Mr
Midnight and Geronimo at a fraction of the cost
                for a new one.

Yes I think you should show her how to use the dictionary. But don't stress her if she does not like to do so.

For my kids, I usually explain the words to them by acting it out. I am still looking for good English dictionaries for kids, the ones that I have are not extensive enough.

You should look for those with as many pictures so kids can understand better.

You can try online dictionaries first :
