      Hi 陈老师,

Is there a way to teach 解释上下文 for HCL? Is there a method of answering based on the type of sentence given? I noticed sometimes it only required the child to “change” the word (swap) to retain the meaning, sometimes the sentence required the child to explain. Thanks!!!
Hi Reenie, to be able to utilize contextual clues to answer questions for comprehension, it is important to \"digest\" the content of the passage. For Sec lvl, esp. HCL, it is not as direct as in Pri sch lvl in terms of \"just\" looking at the text before and after keywords/phrases to pick out the answers (which I guess is understandable, since this their language proficiency should have improved and passages move on from narrative to other types such as informative and discursive/argumentative ones too 🙂 ).

Do check out this post I made previously: https://www.kiasuparents.com/kiasu/forum/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=8835&p=1958402&hilit=chenlaoshi#p1958400 Hope it helps! 😉

Ok I see, it really takes a while to understand….. guess more reading and effort in digesting the content is required. Thanks 陈老师!

            Hi newbieks,

For 材料作文, there are mainly 2 types of questions, 1 is asking for views(看法类), the other is asking for suggestions/solutions (如何类). In the essay, the students have to discuss on the
            - causes & consequences
            - solutions

For 看法类, the ratio of focus on the above will be 6:4, for 如何类, it's vice versa.

As for coming out with solutions, unless specifically stated, the tip will be to consider from the following points of view:
            - self/individual
            - family & friends
            - school/organization, government

In summary, the structure will be state the issue > analyse the issue > (attempt to) solve the issue.

              Don't mention it, Reenie.

Yeah, the passages are not as direct and many times (esp. in upper Sec), there are references to quotes and/or famous ppl/incidents so reading and analytical skills come very much into play (after which the student will have to display his/her language & expression skills when penning down the answers).

Thanks chen laoshi. For the 1st type, sometimes we need to make a stand as in agree or not right? How to tell whether the question is asking for a stand or to discuss the reasons and consequences?

                  newbieks,

For 看法类,it may not necessarily be agree or not. The news may mention a trend so in terms of views, the student should be sharing what he/she thinks are the causes and consequences.

Regarding your 2nd question, need to 审题 (analyse the question) - the same procedure that the student will need to apply when attempting narrative/discursive/argumentative questions. Generally, the student will have to state his/her stand (agree/disagree, should/should not) when there are decisions/opinions involved/stated in the news. If it's just a trend, then the student just need to list out cause/reason. consequences (how in depth depends on the question), solutions.

1st question above mentioned about the avg. no. of accidents at road intersection involving pedestrians/cyclists & cars over the past 5 years (this is a trend). The focus in writing here will be to analyse the reasons why followed by suggestions how to prevent such accidents from happening.

2nd question above mentioned about the need for education to focus on technological skills, bilingualism and resilience in this ever-changing world (this is an opinion). Here's you'll have to state if you agree and then provide the reasons why or why not before moving on to give example of how these can be incorporated in/nurtured via education.

Thanks...seems for a not so strong writer, this kind of essay is easiest to write out of point...compared to say yilun wen. Unfortunately for coming EYA, both options are this kind of essay....cannot siam.

Yeah, it's more targeted compared to 议论文. If given the choice (no major issues regarding understanding of related theme/topic), I will choose 议论文 ahead of 材料新闻, leaving 记叙文 as the backup alternative.

Some schools inform the students of the range of topics that may be tested for WA/SA - others give reading materials throughout the year/closer to these test/exam, so based on those notes, can prepare accordingly (although of course, eventually, for national exams, there are no such \"hints\" or directly given scope of topics). All the best to your child's EYA!

Yes, some schools e.g NYGH are (surprising) kinder in the sense that for WA this year, teacher gave 2-3 topics for the students to prepare for. For EYA, also gave various option types for zuowen and shiyong wen.

Bui not much resources given for this child's school...can just hope for the best. I also tell my child it's ok even if not able to clear EYA...at most switch to normal chinese next year. Pray for the best 🙂
