            Hi,

How do your kids prepare for Chinese? Any students here please advise how you study for Chinese? My girl is Sec 2 and she has home group tuition but she still do quite badly in her school test. I am quite kiasu and worried for her "o" level in 2 years time. If i am not wrong that "o" take place in May on 2016. How to make her to have confidence in Chinese? She always told me very difficult and cannot focus.

My dd in sec one & failed her hcl common test badly. She hated hcl & the teacher. She was selected based on the sch entry test & i told her to take up since selected.

Now she wanted to drop hcl as she finds it v tough.
Would like to seek parents opinion whether should she drop hcl or continue for whole of sec one.

I suggest discussing with her and try for another term. If the results are still no good then, and she still wants to drop it, then support her decision.

That's what I will do. At the end of the day, I much prefer my children to look back and know that I have supported them in their growing up years on the decisions they undertake. Better this way than have them looking back and this HCL thing stands out like a sore point.

Many of us didn't take HCL in secondary school, but I don't think we are doing too badly as adults and parents, ya? 🙂

My Sec 1 dd didn't qualify for HCL in Sec1. She was rather consistent in her Pri. 6 HCL and we thought she would do well enough to be offered. She wasn't during PSLE (separate story). We appealed for her to take HCL in Sec1 on the grounds that she did it for 6 years and CL/HCL has always a subject that she can cope. It's a waste to give it up. Fortunately school was open to our appeal subsequently.

To us, besides being a waste after so many years, taking up HCL is more like a strategic reason for O Levels as there is 2 points deduction.

During her recent common tests, she topped her class for HCL paper. Was pleasantly surprised but at the same I felt relieved that we made the right move to appeal for her that she is able to cope. Just 🙏 that this is a confidence booster and she continues to work hard on her HCL and be consistent in her results.

For her, she continued with HCL enrichment lesson with the same enrichment centre as Primary.

Discuss with her the options and the path that it may lead to.
One of the determining factors is whether she wants to go JC or Poly, or even other options?

If she choose to go JC:

Is there affiliated JC with your dd secondary school?
If not the 2 points that you can get from Hcl is very useful.

If there is affiliation, does she know that she will need to take Chinese in JC if she does not do Hcl in Secondary school?

If taking the Poly route, I guess the issue of whether taking HCL or not may not be so critical.

There are advantages to taking HCL in sec school, in particular the 2 bonus points at O levels as well as being able to drop the subject in JC.

That said, how is her HCL? She will need to clear her O level CL exam at Sec 3 with B3 or better before being allowed to take the HCL O level exam at Sec 4. If you don't think this is possible, then don't bother continuing with HCL because she won't be allowed to take the O level exam anyway. Also, a poor grade in HCL in Sec 1,2 and 3 may impact her overall results which could mean her not being able to do certain subject combinations, depending on her school.

In short, if she is alright in the subject, go ahead and do HCL. If she's doing really poorly, then just focus on CL.
