Helplessmum3,
Re sitting down to watch TV.
Mayb u wan to try negotiating with the teachers to see if he can do other activities or not. In my boy's school, they have chapel once a week. My boy also can't sit still 'cos he is bored. His teacher gave him a stress ball to squeeze while waiting for the service to be over. Sometimes, he will help to massage his teacher's arm instead.

Hi Fizz,
Gifts from Heaven
Thanks. I looked through Book Depository...it costs about $40+? I shall consider the Jed Baker book too.
I did not meet up with the AED. She called me after the admin conveyed my call to her. Briefly based on what she told me over the phone, the school will have educator counsellors or something to that name, over on a monthly basis to assess the special needs kids. I suspect this may be a MOE initiative as I know another school has this too. The AED will also organise opportunities for the ASD kids to come together and practise social skills with one another. On the day of the orientation, the AED will already know the class of the special needs kids and ready to help on hand if needed. We passed the report to the admin and the AED said the VP will call us regarding the allocation of class.
All books on ASD are v expensive. Our psychologist even recommend one book which cost $100+ to buy locally :yikes: . I still hvnt buy those books, just borrow fr library to see see first. But unfortunately, that $100+ book cannot be found in our local library, so looks like got to just buy.
Re primary school support for ASD kids
Do you know if the school will give assistance to ASD kids upon their entry immediately? Or will they be treated like normal kids first and the teachers will observe them for 1-2 terms first to see if the kids can handle the demands of the school before AED/school counsellor step in? Do you know if any assistance will be given to ASD kids during recess and assembly time?
How many AEDs/school counsellor does your boy's school have?
Hehehe
....U can tell I'm getting worried even though my boy is not due for P1 until 2014.

Gifts from Heaven:
All schs have different levels of support. So before enrolling, check out their website. They will have a list of AEDs in their schools. Some schs have more, some lesser. I've checked the no of AEDs in my boy's sch, there are quite a lot. Got even more this yr.

For my boy's sch, during orientation, we have to fill up a form on whether our kids have special needs. Coz during that time, we haven't had a confirmed diagnosis, so we didn't say anything. But once we confirmed, we sent an email to the AED of the sch and asked to arrange for a mtg with her. We first met her and the form teacher two weeks after first day of school. We had a mtg about his quirks, any special things she should take note of, how she can handle him etc. As the class had 2 autistic kids, she requested for an AED in the class during lesson time. The AED is there for English and maths classes only. During the mtg, the AED said will have social groups etc but so far nothing leh. But she also said my boy's condition looks not too bad as she has also observed him for the first two weeks. She said have autistic kids who still needed help toileting at Pri 5. -

Nordic naturals have both chewable soft gels and liquid type. Just be sure to get the children version. My boy took the liquid type till he could chew the chewables. He now loves the chewables and can easily pop 4 at once. -
After visiting the pediatrician and giving him medication which he detest, my son is having very bad meltdowns and tantrums which we never experience before. His fever subsided and only slight coughing now. He will ask for his milk, and we give it to him… then he will throw it away and ask for water…and then threw it away, asking back for milk…throwing things around… doing all sorts of things that we do not know what he wants, when we follows what he wanted… it has been ongoing since his visit to the doctor for the past 2-3 days, and he wakes up during the night having bad tantrum several times… what should we do? i cannot bring him back to see a doctor again since his condition is so unstable…

Good post Fizz ... :goodpost:

The ball is in your hands to choose the right teachers and culture to work with your child. There are schools out there which are willing. But give the current teachers a chance first by working and communicating closely with them.
Helplessmum
I think Fizz has raised a good point. I find that the needs of my child are a moving target, and it is in my hands to put in efforts to make things work, and if things dont, change and adapt.
From what you have shared, you have put in efforts to try to make things work. It is really your call on what to do next and how to do to make things work, as you are in the best position to make that call. Whatever the decision on whether to remain or change school, as a fellow forummer and a parent of a ASD child, I just want to let you know my empathy for the tough period that you are going through.
We all go into tough periods at one point or another. Just like you, I also have rough patches from time to time. Just hang on, try to be positive and dont give up. Our situation is not the worst, there are mothers out there with kids who have invasive conditions or genetic defects and they have not given up. So there is no reason we should. -

Actually, my NT gal does that to me sometimes too. They are just simply sick and in a bad mood. Don't take it too hard alright? When he recovers, he will be much better. I remembered how my gal would wake up at night just to cry and made me carry her throughout the night. And I couldn't sit! The moment I sit down, she wakes up and throw a huge tantrum all over again. And mind u, she's a normal kid. I think my boy also never behaved as badly as her when he was sick.
My children hated med when they were younger too! Had to bundle them up and force feed. They will then regurgitate like a volcano. My boy was so bad we appeared in a magazine on it! Lol. Both NT and non NT hate medicine. Now both are ok with meds. My children will now ask for them becoz they know they get better after the meds. Of course when the meds tastes really bad, we give them some vitamin gummy bears. It helps.
