Greetings. Which area are you residing? You may want to read more on primary schools here : http://www.moe.gov.sg/education/programmes/support-for-children-special-needs/
        or
        http://www.moe.gov.sg/education/admissions/primary-one-registration/listing-by-planning-area/

I suggest that you give them a call, pay a visit to understand what they can do for your girl. I prefer to be ensured that the assistance is in place before I place mine.

I have been looking for on-the-ground experience and reputation of primary schools with good support for autism, but to no avail. While the information on MOE website is understandably crafted in certain manner, it is of no help at all.

The standard reply that I have received is that you have to look at your child’s needs and development and map it against the school, considering that ASD is a wide spectrum and that there is no one-size-fits-all.

It would be helpful if the early intervention schools could compile a list of primary schools that their children go to on a yearly basis and publish it in public domain. This acts as a good starting point for parents to then do their groundwork on finding the right school for their kids. I agree that parents should do their homework - but we dont know where to start.

Sorry that I have not answered the question but just voicing my frustrations.

Hi imMeeMee, I totally agree with what u wrote . All asd kids r not the same and it’s really tough for parents to find a match. I am sure that as parents we did our homework before seeking for more assistance as we r determine that our child deserve every rights to be given the equal opportunity like the rest of the typical kids. Right now I am pretty anxious looking around for local school that can really manage asd child so if anyone who happen to know any primary or cOnvent school pls drop me a message.thanks

Try calling Anderson Primary or Maris Stella. I’ve heard of kids with special needs being accepted in these schools (but not sure of the extent / type of help the kids need). Hope this helps.

Hi pen88n, appreciate ur infos. I am staying in tampines and if I am not wrong Anderson primary is in yio cho kang area and Maris Stella is a boys school. Just for ur infos I’ve called up schools that is out of my zone before, guess what the principle hint me ? They told me that they will not reject any pupils but due to location distance it will be at my disadvantage …‘sign’ 😞

[Editor's Note: Article selected for http://www.kiasuparents.com/kiasu/content/mother-and-her-daughter.]

I was at the therapy centre yesterday for one of dd3's routine sessions, waiting for her. A mother with a down's daughter came to the waiting area. She was a friend of a mother whose son was also undergoing therapy at the centre, whom I also knew.

Brief introductions were made, and the three of us started chatting. The Mother started to tell me about her experience with her daughter, who is in P5 in a mainstream school. She shared that her daughter was now learning abacus and ballet. She showed us her daughter’s abacus workbooks and started to explain some of the advanced concepts that her daughter was working on. She also shared that her daughter failed in certain subjects and is currently working hard to catch up.

The conversation turned to my situation and I gave her a brief outline without going into details. I asked her a few questions about her experience in school placement. She started to share with me on how she got into the mainstream school, and what were the hurdles in between. The Mother shared that she herself only had a P6 education, so she went into her daughter’s class and learnt about the math concepts so that she could go home and teach her daughter. She gave me tips on what to do and what to look out for. There were a few details that I asked that she could not recall, but she said she will check and let me know through our mutual friend.

Throughout the conversation the Mother and daughter expressed considerable affection for each other with hugs and smiles. She said her daughter was lucky.

Time to go and the usual goodbyes. I found myself saying ‘thanks’ to her before she left.

After she left I thought about her, and I was moved to tears. This is a mother who is full of energy and optimism for her daughter. She was clearly proud of her daughter’s achievements. She was beaming with pride but she was not showing off. There is thin line in between, but she carried that off very well.

Here is a fellow stranger who is gracious and unassuming in sharing her life experience with another fellow stranger. She had no inhibitions and fear in telling me as much as she knew, someone that she has only got to know barely minutes before.

She may not have received a high education, but during that brief encounter she has been a teacher to me. I saw in her the things that I have been looking for since a long time ago, and she showed me that it can be done.

It was an inspirational moment for me.

For mums who have gone through the process of deferring their child for a year for P1, can you share your experiences on how you made the decision? Do you find that it helped the child?

                    Thanks in advance for sharing.
