Double E,
I would like my children to swim. It is a good form of exercise n a good skill to learn. However I have to put on hold. I am not quite sure how to put my thoughts into words so that I can explain it clearly why a delay is necessary.
Just a year ago, he was a sickly child. Fall ill very often. Constant green thick mucus. Any form of medication from PD or ENT specialist didn't help. Non verbal. Poor awareness of his surrounding. Then we started biomed n did his first hair test. Essential minerals such as magnesium, zinc, selenium extremely low. Potassium, boron, molybdenum were extremely high. His cadmium (toxic element) was kind of off the chart. This says he is unable to detoxify on his own. Detoxification is actually a complicating process. A healthy person wouldn't need external help to remove toxin but for a child like mine, help is definitely required.
In biomed, there r several ways of chelating toxin. Most commonly seen would be DMPS/DMSA ( drugs) or zeolite (mineral) or building up adequate
essential minerals/vitamins/amino acids etc etc so that body is able to remove toxin on it's own. For me, I go for non invasive protocol ( which I find it takes a much longer n tiring period but definitely safer). I don't do DMSA. I would rather improve his immune system so that one day it is up n
running good again. But meanwhile whilst building up his reserves, I have
to try not to let too many external factors to deplete it. Perhaps most children r able to get rid of chlorine from their system but it would be a added burden to my child.
But i dont do extremes la. It is impossible to avoid all n i really not so \"on the ball\" mummy. So far, I only let him play in the pool during staycation. I would apply a very thick layer of cold pressed coconut oil all over him before dipping n then have him soak in a tub filled with Epsom salt bath after. Anyway he is only 4. Maybe one day in the near future, he will learn swimming. Be it when he turns 6 or 8, not an issue to me. When he is ready, he is ready. I am fine with that
Our kids r of the same age but your child's development is way ahead of mine in terms of speech, social skill n others. he probably also does not have health issues as bad as my son. N thus our path in helping our
children would be very different too which u might not be able to understand why certain practises is necessary. Based on your sharing, u r a good mum. Happy to have u around to share. -
Jme
Thanks for explaining. I asked because I am about to start my boy on his swimming lesson in two mths time hence i am curious what would be so harmful in the pool that is detrimental to our kids. I only know there’s chlorine in there but not too sure if that is toxic enough. I guess I have to remind my husband to rinse him well after his swimming lessons.
Sure, all of our kids here are of different levels of skill sets and me too have to tailor the methods that best suit his needs. I tried biomed for only a mth and stopped because I find it very difficult to follow the dos and don’ts esp food. And can’t bear to see my son taking so many different types of supplements every day with each supplement having to take like 3 times a day. He shudders everytime he has to take it. So for my case, I decided to stop and revert to the traditional way of treating him which is therapies.
Jme,
Apart from biomed, you may want to try neurofeedback. My son is on it now, I am not sure if is 100% due to neurofeedback, his therapies could have helped too, but he is definitely more aware of his surroundings now. I can share the contact if you are keen and is not expensive, $60 per session for about 35mins. -

Another thought - with HFMD and various other sicknesses around, it's probably also safer to teach kids to limit such close contact with others.
Your son is still young, and the girls in his class may not have developed a sense of personal space yet. However, as he grows older, you may need to specifically teach him how to respect other people's space as some kids may not be able to pick up such social cues without instruction. You certainly don't want him hugging and kissing his classmates when he's 13yo!helplessmum3:
oh no. i always encourage my son to hug friends & give kisses :P...
but usually he just hug... them to acknowledge them..
he like some pretty girls in class too, but he jus playful w them by keep their toys and make them look for him to find them ahaah.. -
Double E:
Today I shared with my boy's therapists about his issue of getting too friendly with his classmate. I drafted a social story and they offered to help me edit and include pictures for me. I am so grateful to them. Is such time that I feel having a therapist to guide me along is necessary, if not I will be quite lost. I hope the social story will work for him. But I would also like to thank Slmkhoo and ImMeeMee for the tips. I am trying to demo to him as well.
Good one Double E.
Personally I also find that I need professional help to guide me along. I recall that when my doter was 3 yo, non-verbal and oblivious to the world, and when I was trying to build her literacy, I used to feel helpless and lost, and many times I wondered to myself - with so many things to learn, where to start and how?
Along the way with professional guidance, I have come to learn the way to teach an ASD child. Simply put, there are two dimensions to this teaching fundamentals (1) the content, which is pretty much the same as what a NT child is required to learn; and (2) the methodologies, which are specific for ASD children - rote learn, visual cues, breakdown of tasks, add on, apply to daily life.
Recently I have started to teach my doter Chinese, and due to resource constraints, I have taken a DIY approach using the same principles above. I find that I am not as lost as before, and I can stay focused on what to teach my doter at every stage. Although she is still not independent in conversing the language, her Chinese vocab has improved quite a lot. My hope for her is to have some knowledge of Chinese and Mandarin so that she can be functional in her daily living in future.
Parents need to learn the appropriate techniques to teach our children using whichever way, and once we find the rightful fundamentals, we could apply them in whichever situation we are in.
Just my humble sharing. -
Double E,
My ex DAN told me to go for craniosacral therapy. My friend tried bioresonance therapy. Even nature’s glory has this nano energy booster that claims to help autism. Why did u pick neurotherapy? Cos I am really confused with all these methods. N I am kiasi. So even though I want to try a different approach, I afraid it might backfire. But I believe it must be effective for u to be able to feel the difference n I would like to find out more from the practitioner. Can I have your contact please. Thank you.
Btw, u mentioned that your child goes to kindergarten n private epic every day. Once a week private OT ( 1 hour? ) and ST (1 hour? ) and neurotherapy and private tuition and swimming starts two months later. Is that correct? Is your private OT n ST from different centre or provided by the same epic centre. My son is doing OT n ST every alternate week. Been contemplating for weekly session but private sessions r just soooo expensive. -
ImMeeMee,
Knowing that your child was non verbal n low awareness at the age of 3 n she has improved so much that she is able to enroll into pathlight, it gives me hope

Hi mummies (and daddies, if any)
Need some advice. My son’s going to Pri 1 next year, and his therapist says I need to work on some issues with him. He’s diagnosed with Aspergers. The most pressing issue now is that he won’t open his mouth to ask for help, or to ask to go toilet etc during class. His kindy is only 3 hrs long so he will go toilet at home before class, and when he comes home after class - but primary school is gonna be a lot longer and I’m sure he won’t be able to hold it in. I’ve tried speaking to him about it, and he promises me that he will ask the teacher for permission when he needs to go… but so far he hasnt. In fact he has wet his pants twice during therapy because he refused to ask to go toilet. Same thing about refusing to ask for help… he’ll dawdle over the work until his teacher/therapist notices and comes over to help. Was wondering if anyone has any ideas how I can help him along? Thank you! -
ImMeeMee,
You gal has come a long way…
Just sharing my thoughts…
I am finding it hard to teach my son english. Dare not venture into chinese yet. Also partly because my chinese is not good as well. But he does recognize some of the simple chinese characters.
Those grammar concepts is so hard to teach. I am thinking of hiring a tuition teacher for him. But should I share my son’s condition with the tuition teacher? Or should let the tuition teacher just teach him? I really don’t know as well.
Once I tell the tuition teacher my son has ASD, maybe the price of the tuition fee will goes up too… -

Neurofeedback - I have never heard of the two therapies u mentioned, only neuro, also from one of the mummies from this forum. And I happened to see a leaflet of the neurofeedback centre at my son's OT so I called up to inquire. You can call Gavin at 9431 0505, he is very patient in explaining the methodology to me. U can let your boy do a trial first before committing on a 12 week session.Double E,

My boy's Eipic and ST is from the same centre, OT and neurofeedback is from same building but different centre. So I schedule his appointments such that those are from the same centre/building is on the same day so that my husband doesn't need to run to too many places in a day. I had contemplated of putting my boy on bi-weekly OT when I thought he has improved but the therapist feels otherwise and encourage me to put him on weekly. So all his therapies are on a weekly basis. Did I also mentioned I have a home tutor? she comes twice or thrice a mth, teach him Eng and Maths but as she is also a special needs teacher, there is also some form of therapy involved especially on speech. For example, she will show him a picture and get him to talk about it, quite similar to what his speech therapist do. But this tutor went one step further by helping me to teach him write, count, read, sorting, understand patterns, read instructions etc. And most imptly, teach him when is time for him to work independently.
So now for work that I think he can manage, I try not to sit beside him to watch him do. I will ask him to do it himself while I do my housework. When he is done, he is to bring his work and show me. Actually, I am the one who finds it hard to let go because I have a tendency of wanting to check what he is doing and see if he is day-dreaming. And I can't help it but go to him to bring him back from his la la land when he gets distracted and doing other things other than his piece of work -

That is very good. My son needs a lot of prompting and encouragement. He will do one question, want me to acknowledge to tell him its correct, then he will move on to another question.
My next task is to get him to worksheets independently. And also to teach him is okay to get 1-2 questions wrong. Only when he is unsure then ask me. Otherwise do finish then I will mark it.
He seem to have a problem to \"Always must get all answers correct\".
Double E, Can you share how much is your tutor? Which area do you live? Not too sure where can I get special needs tutor.
