Hi mummies (and daddies, if any)

Need some advice. My son’s going to Pri 1 next year, and his therapist says I need to work on some issues with him. He’s diagnosed with Aspergers. The most pressing issue now is that he won’t open his mouth to ask for help, or to ask to go toilet etc during class. His kindy is only 3 hrs long so he will go toilet at home before class, and when he comes home after class - but primary school is gonna be a lot longer and I’m sure he won’t be able to hold it in. I’ve tried speaking to him about it, and he promises me that he will ask the teacher for permission when he needs to go… but so far he hasnt. In fact he has wet his pants twice during therapy because he refused to ask to go toilet. Same thing about refusing to ask for help… he’ll dawdle over the work until his teacher/therapist notices and comes over to help. Was wondering if anyone has any ideas how I can help him along? Thank you!

        ImMeeMee,

You gal has come a long way…

        Just sharing my thoughts…

I am finding it hard to teach my son english. Dare not venture into chinese yet. Also partly because my chinese is not good as well. But he does recognize some of the simple chinese characters.

Those grammar concepts is so hard to teach. I am thinking of hiring a tuition teacher for him. But should I share my son’s condition with the tuition teacher? Or should let the tuition teacher just teach him? I really don’t know as well.

Once I tell the tuition teacher my son has ASD, maybe the price of the tuition fee will goes up too…

          Double E,

My ex DAN told me to go for craniosacral therapy. My friend tried bioresonance therapy. Even nature's glory has this nano energy booster that claims to help autism. Why did u pick neurotherapy? Cos I am really confused with all these methods. N I am kiasi. So even though I want to try a different approach, I afraid it might backfire. But I believe it must be effective for u to be able to feel the difference n I would like to find out more from the practitioner. Can I have your contact please. Thank you.

Btw, u mentioned that your child goes to kindergarten n private epic every day. Once a week private OT ( 1 hour? ) and ST (1 hour? ) and neurotherapy and private tuition and swimming starts two months later. Is that correct? Is your private OT n ST from different centre or provided by the same epic centre. My son is doing OT n ST every alternate week. Been contemplating for weekly session but private sessions r just soooo expensive.
Neurofeedback - I have never heard of the two therapies u mentioned, only neuro, also from one of the mummies from this forum. And I happened to see a leaflet of the neurofeedback centre at my son's OT so I called up to inquire. You can call Gavin at 9431 0505, he is very patient in explaining the methodology to me. U can let your boy do a trial first before committing on a 12 week session.

My boy's Eipic and ST is from the same centre, OT and neurofeedback is from same building but different centre. So I schedule his appointments such that those are from the same centre/building is on the same day so that my husband doesn't need to run to too many places in a day. I had contemplated of putting my boy on bi-weekly OT when I thought he has improved but the therapist feels otherwise and encourage me to put him on weekly. So all his therapies are on a weekly basis. Did I also mentioned I have a home tutor? she comes twice or thrice a mth, teach him Eng and Maths but as she is also a special needs teacher, there is also some form of therapy involved especially on speech. For example, she will show him a picture and get him to talk about it, quite similar to what his speech therapist do. But this tutor went one step further by helping me to teach him write, count, read, sorting, understand patterns, read instructions etc. And most imptly, teach him when is time for him to work independently.

So now for work that I think he can manage, I try not to sit beside him to watch him do. I will ask him to do it himself while I do my housework. When he is done, he is to bring his work and show me. Actually, I am the one who finds it hard to let go because I have a tendency of wanting to check what he is doing and see if he is day-dreaming. And I can't help it but go to him to bring him back from his la la land when he gets distracted and doing other things other than his piece of work

            Double E,

That is very good. My son needs a lot of prompting and encouragement. He will do one question, want me to acknowledge to tell him its correct, then he will move on to another question.

My next task is to get him to worksheets independently. And also to teach him is okay to get 1-2 questions wrong. Only when he is unsure then ask me. Otherwise do finish then I will mark it.

He seem to have a problem to \"Always must get all answers correct\".

Double E, Can you share how much is your tutor? Which area do you live? Not too sure where can I get special needs tutor.

In my opinion, if you are planning to send him to mainstream, it is necessary to have a tuition teacher unless u are confident that he will be able to absorb well in class and doesn't need additional help. I am not confident so I kiasu, hired a tutor for my boy when he was in N1 cos for me, I am not familiar with the curriculum, am not sure what needs to be taught. It was only after getting the tutor then I realised there ARE SO MUCH for him to learn, even I am overwhelmed.

Or you can try sending your son to Cognitive Learning Centre at Fusionopolis building at One-North? Its a tuition centre specialised in teaching special needs kids. I saw their advertisement banner in this forum before. They provide class and home based learning. If I recall correctly, Home based is $80 per hour but min. 2 hours.

I think is impt to get a tutor that is aware of his condition so that teaching methods can be tailored to help him learn better.

Knowing that your child was non verbal n low awareness at the age of 3 n she has improved so much that she is able to enroll into pathlight, it gives me hope 😄
jme, thanks. I think you deserve a lot more kudos yourself, given that your child has a lot more difficult issues to deal with. :hugs:

Her charges is $100 to $120 for an hour. Very expensive in my opinion. But what to do? If my boy needs it, then I try to provide as much as I can. But she is good so is well worth the money. I stay in central area. However, she has stopped taking new cases as she claims she is too busy. But if you are interested, I think she can recommend her friend who is also a special needs teacher.

My boy too will seek affirmation from me after doing one question. He will look at me before proceeding to the next one. But I guess is my fault, cos if he does it wrongly, I tend to correct him immediately. Perhaps I should follow your style, ok to make mistake just let him try and be independent.

nugget, my doter has a educational therapist. In essence, she is like a tutor that coaches on literacy skills. She is trained in special needs and only coaches special needs children.

Tuition teachers who coach NT children may not know how to specifically deal with our children, so I think it is better to get someone trained in this area.

One thing I have learnt though is that sometimes therapists tend to over-teach. So I have slowed things down by putting my doter on a handwriting program and deferred the literacy program for a while. Its also to help her catch up on her handwriting cos its still not coming through. And since I am targeting for a deferment program next year, I reckon that there is still some time where I can pace things a bit.

                      Gosh.. Its very expensive

Unfortunately, I cannot afford that now. Sigh. Maybe I should try a regular tutor first. He is quite receptive to 1-1 teaching. If really cannot work out then decide what else to do.

My boy gets very upset to see a \"X\" (cross) on his worksheets. Wants me to erase away. I think he has some ego issues to deal with. Its okay to make mistake.. But I dun want to brush it off like its no big deal.. then it might have a adverse effect..worse if he start to anyhow do everything wrongly cos mummy say \"its okay to make mistakes\". I havent thought of how is the best to bring it across.

You are right about so many things to teach. Lately I have been busy with work, once at home need to tend to 3 kids. So many things to deal with.. I really need external help to teach my son academics.

                        ImMeeMee,

Is it a 1-1 lesson? does this educational therapist come to your home to teach?

I just started my son for a group therapy with a educational psychologist. To prep him for P1.. So far only went for 1 lesson. He feels very awkward in the classroom setting. Sit close to teacher, everyone takes turn to answer, when it comes to his turn.. He refuse to talk. Kept very quiet. Even when the rest of the classmates tell him the answer, he also kept quiet.

I am starting to get worry as well.

                        Sigh. Social setting, acaedmics...
