As she became better with word recognition, I changed to more words and less graphics.

This is a board about eating at McDonalds.

This is a board about describing how to make banana smoothie. We made this board after her cookery class in school.

Cant have too many boards here but this is to give you some idea. Please try it out. Its really something that is workable at home.

          Hi tyeogh,

Good luck for your son’s reassessment. Now that PDD-NOS label has been take out of the ASD umbrella, your son will be re-assessed under the the new DSM-V criteria as follow:

          Autism Spectrum Disorder

          Must meet criteria 1, 2, and 3:
          1. Clinically significant, persistent deficits in social communication and interactions, as manifest by all of the following:
          a. Marked deficits in nonverbal and verbal communication used for social interaction:
          b. Lack of social reciprocity;
          c. Failure to develop and maintain peer relationships appropriate to developmental level
          2. Restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, and activities, as manifested by at least TWO of the following:
          a. Stereotyped motor or verbal behaviors, or unusual sensory behaviors
          b. Excessive adherence to routines and ritualized patterns of behavior
          c. Restricted, fixated interests
          3. Symptoms must be present in early childhood (but may not become fully manifest until social demands exceed limited capacities)

            Hi Helplessmum,

Allow me to give me my honest opinion to your situation. You are always lamenting about your son’s weaknesses but yet you didn’t go for any early intervention programs or therapies. May I offer you a ‘solution’? I am not sure if you are aware, but the PDD-NOS label has been removed from ASD umbrella. During the period when your son was assessed with the DSM-IV, as long as a child satisfy more than 6 out of the 12 listed criteria, he is deemed to have ASD. In Singapore, I think the psychologist give the PDD-NOS label when the child doesn’t display any repetitive behavior/ limited interest (parents, please correct me if I am wrong).

Why don’t you ask for a re-assessment for your son? Of course such an assessment can go both ways - the psychologist may really deem your son as autistic or it may go the happy way, your son lost his ASD label and you are no longer always so sad?

But that being said, even if you managed to ‘lose’ the label successfully, you still must help your son in his speech delay (you mentioned he can’t hold a proper conversation at 4). There are private speech therapists who are open on Saturday. Please be happy about your son’s achievements and don’t keep focusing on his weaknesses. Our child didn’t ask to be born, we as parents owe them our unconditional love.

This is good news! Agree with Double E, it looks more like imitation skills than imaginary play. Or a combination of both which is even better news! LoL. To me, imitation skills is the best possible scenario. Once the child can imitate, he will imitate speech, then mannerisms, then habits, then ways of a normal person. Congrats!

Thanks, daddy tyeogh, I sure hope so!

                Here's to wishing you and Double-E a \"Year of Greater Glory\" for 2014!

Happy New Year! Especially to the super on parents of ImMeeMee, Double E, dessertwind, nugget and Mr Tai ko, et al.

How were the first days of school for you? As expected it was super hectic and bloody anxious for moi, mostly my own fault for overthinking haaaaa. Finally back at work and on computer so able to write with spellcheck.

C2 the Pathlighter is settling in well, he even looks forward to taking the school bus every morning. Unfortunately he’s getting anxiety issues in the afternoon during the after school care, quite ironic since it is the same school he has been attending the past 3 years. Still, we were pleasantly surprised that he is able to adjust at PL so quickly but all credit due to the teachers there being on the ball.

C1 got more of a shock when he went to Pri 1 mainstream. He is also attending before school care and they are very strict on the kids being independent. I myself got told off by the manager for not teaching him how to eat his veg, wear his socks and bath himself. Wah, quite disconcerted and only now realised how pampered he has been. So now weekends we are drumming these life skills into him. Emotionally he has been very manja and sticky after school so we have been indulging him with cuddles and hugs. Saw the AED officer being quite attentive to him for the 2 days that we were allowed to be in the school. She was hovering around him for most of recess and even sought me out in the huge crowd of parents to give feedback. She is also letting us meet all his teachers individually in case we need extra help. Grateful for this unexpected care and concern shown and really hope he is able to integrate himself in the school well.

Heard this during the PL orientation speech and also to share with parents here: do not treat Autism preciously. Meaning we shouldn’t withhold punishment, be too indulgent or have low expectations just because of the ASD. Whoa, what a revelation xia!

:celebrate:[/quote]Yes, cheers to a Year of Greater Glory! But hor, I understand the Key of David more than Year of Greater Glory. I thought Key of David's message is very clear. Still trying to understand the message behind Year of Greater Glory, perhaps the more senior NCC members here can help to explain?
