Hi parents, have been teaching my doter addition and subtraction mental calculation at p1 level and hitting a bit of road block here.

We have not much problem when it comes to addition . Eg 9 + 6, she is able to regroup 6 into 1 and 5, add the 1 and 9 to get 10, and then add 5 to get the final answer.

But when it comes to subtraction of eg 16-9, or 14-8, meaning a double digit take away a large single digit, I can’t find a good way to teach her to visualise cos there are more steps involved and it is not as straightforward as addition. She is ok with single digit-single digit subtraction by mental culculation.

What methods do you use to teach your child in this, in particular helping them to visualise the steps, other than counting one by one? Please share with me. TIA.

        Hi ImMeeMee

I put my kids through CMA. They use abacus to teach the child how to visualize addition or subtraction.

In your example of 16-9, to take away 9, it is -10+1. Its much easier to see it on an abacus. Visit http://www.cma.edu.sg if you are keen.

Imho, it helped my 3 kids achieve what they did in primary school. I just signed up my 4th kid for it. Didn't tell them his condition. He will be going for his 2nd lesson this week. Keeping my fingers crossed!

          Hi Double E

National Dental Center (@ Outram) offers dentistry services for special needs kids. They have dentists who are trained in various SN conditions, including autism. My son too had quite bad teeth conditions and gasp, had 11 teeths to be fixed.

I first went to the Polyclinic to get a referral so that there will be a subsidy. I think the subsidy is about 50%. I do not recall waiting for a long time for the specialist apt. I think I was given a date 1 - 2 mths later. So it was quite worth it going by the Poly route. Because in my son case, eventually we had to do a surgery (too many problem teeths :nailbite: ). We saved half the cost with the subsidy. The dentist was professional and kind.

Thanks for the sharing. I shall go Polyclinic to get a referral, cos private dentistry for kids is quite exp.

Also Just to share with all, my son had his IQ test done at HPB yesterday. Thank God he passed the mark that is good enough for Pathlight. I had thought he would score higher though. The Psychologist said he was listless and very cheeky during the session and she believed that affected his score, said he could hv scored higher. And in the report, she will indicate that he is suitable for both Mainstream and Pathlight. So is now up to me and husband to decide.

Thanks for the idea, tyeogh. I think it still bores down to 10s, so will work out a method to teach her. Its important to master the basic foundation of addition and subtraction as the syllabus keeps adding on to the building blocks.

BTW, ICCP refers to this group of childcare centers that integrate both special needs and NT children together. The teachers are trained, and there is are specific ratios ref teachers, NT kids and special needs kids to fulfil. Because of this, there is always a long queue. I recall enquiring with one near home during my doter's pre-school years, and there was not even a chance at all.

Good for you, Double E! And congrats for having a choice in this.

Still considerable time before making a decision and acting on it, am sure you will make a good choice in the end.

Thanks ImMeeMee. Indeed, lots of considerations to think over. The psychologist will also be arranging a social class for my son when I told her about some of the social issues he faces. He will be grouped with kids of similar ability in KKH's social class next year, a 8-week programme. This is timely as I had stopped my son's social class at Leapfrog due to conflicting schedule with another lesson. And it is indeed right to say that when God closes one door, another will be opened for us. :celebrate:

                      hi tyeogh,

when you mentioned about the private eipic at joo chiat, was that ARN? i went there to take a look before enrolling my son at private centre. Didn't feel quite right the moment we stepped in there, so I put my son somewhere else which me & my husband feels much more comfortable even to this day. Just wondering :scared:

updates on my son (turning 3 soon), he can start saying more words now & more clearly. The therapists are working hard on his articulation, he can say more words & read them simultenously as they're using alphabets to practice with his articulation. The behaviour consultant is telling me that he's progressing, but she really wants him to progress faster. So the team of therapists & herself is working hard on it right now. :xedfingers:

He loves his puzzles & can fixed 24-piece puzzles, set up & fix a any train tracks, putting mr potato head's body parts correctly, basically playing more properly. They're also teaching him to be more social (e.g. We did the trial today by putting a toy gun that he likes on the floor & wait for his respond, he actually picked it up, try to pull the trigger & came up to me and said \"help\" requesting me to pull the trigger, which is great to see :rahrah:)

And whenever someone approach him & said hi to him, with prompting he's willing to say hi back & wave to the person with a quick glance  when he's going for his therapy, i will say bye bye to him & he said it back. I would give him a kiss bye and he kiss bye back as well without prompting (i guess he's copying what i'm doing). I know it sounds simple, but it means the world to me. Just like tyeogh said, after being SO MUCH poorer, but it's so worth to see all that happening to him. I think those things won't happen without the help of ABA therapy :hugs:

                        Hi

Is it true that in order to go into eipic a child need to go through formal clinical dignosis by psychologist to diagnose him as autistic? Or suspect ASD is acceptable for him to attend eipic ?
