      hi nugget :snuggles:

i understand what you mean, i get worried alot at times too about my daughter.
but what the therapist told me before is quite true too, God takes away some of their skills but give them other skills instead.
my daughter tho is high functioning autism, but she learns things at an amazing speed with a very good memory. she is quite good in art and reading too.
tell me some skills that our kids here have? :please:
i am sure every one of our kids here have a gift that other kids do not have. my daughter tho is still picking up in her social skills with kids her age, but she is very good with adults. the allied educator and teacher told me it is a joy to have her in class as she is always smiling
i believe that when this door closes, another door will open up for them. and my bond with my daughter has become closer after knowing and learning about her condition. I believe all of us here feel this way too.
      🕺
Yes, He takes some, He gives some. My boy is very good in reading and science is his forte. He has been learning about atoms and molecules, chemical bonding by himself. Also knows more about the universe (like red giants and white dwarves) than us. He is only 6.

Woah sounds like your kids do found their own area of excellence.
I am still trying to figure out my son strong point. He also had very good memory skills and is able to read. However, need to know what his interest is so can enable him to go to the next level.

            Hi Helpelessmum3,

Maybe after scolding him, you follow up with a negative consequence.

Example, you scolded at him cos he was taking his toy truck to knock off a pile of clothes you have just folded. You tell him firmly it is wrong for him to do that, then you follow up with a negative consequence of taking away his toy truck so he is not allowed to play with it. So he know if he do something not nice, he wont be able to play with his toy.

Kids with ASD doesn't know how to read expressions and quite oblivious to feelings. Hence he might not know and understand you are angry and thought all the shouting / scolding is that you are trying to play with him.

              Nugget

Think exposure is everything. I started off giving my son a book on moon because he likes to spin and all things round. It progressed to the planets and more. Then he started on atoms also because it's like a mini solar system.
I think like temple grandin who started from liking horses, it just moved on to all other related stuff. Just needed to find that common thread. 🙂

most of our kids are ‘visual learner’ and are very good in memorizing.

For my boy, he learnt all the roads in Singapore by playing with the iphone google map app (the one that have photos). He is now our walking GPS and street directory. Visual aids is always helpful when we are teaching visual learner. For my son, I got to use fingers to help my son to learn the 4 intonation in hanyu pinyin, which he is struggling with.

Regarding reading people’s expression/feelings, it can be taught, but then must first build up eye contact.

But my son know which teacher he likes n know which teacher he don’t like.

As some teachers talk to him he will look out n smile , and if the teacher he don’t like talk to him , he will put his head down n not looking at her even if she try to pull his head up.

Are these related to read feelings or difference ?
