NLB has many Bill Nye DVDs and other science/history related DVDs. You can either check their online catalogue or go to the bigger branches to browse. Our public libraries are really one of the best things in Singapore.

To the OP, if you are looking for something that caters to a wide age range, what about natural science videos? National Geographic and BBC have some good ones that are visually stunning and scientifically sound. Of course, if you’re looking for something that will boost their science results, these will not be what you are looking for. But if it’s more for personal interest and general knowledge, they are a great choice for the family and such value for money!! My two boys love them and it’s something I also don’t mind sitting down to. With their TV quota in place, each series last them quite long, and they can watch them again and again, and then watch with special features or behind-the-scene footage. Very good value. I get the DVDs so sometimes they are forced to watch it in Mandarin, hahaha.

Bill Nye is very visual and filled with slap-stick humour, occasionally loud. Great for some, not so for others. I prefer to just have the information given to me, no need for pie-throwing just to help me remember something thank you. (But I can’t deny that works well for some kids). Magic Schoolbus - again, depends on the child. It breaks things down quite well, easy to understand, but appeal is quite personal. There are some nerdy humour and a lot of puns, so a younger child may need some explanation.

The one series that I can’t stand and never show my children is the Steve Irwin’s series. Saw it recently on a ferry and I’m just appalled all over again at how he treats animals.

This one I agree. Can you imagine if a physically bigger or technologically more advanced \"alien\" species came by Earth and started \"documenting\" us the way he does? Aiyoh!

            Hi all,

Would like to recommend this video series, Bill Nye the Science Guy to interest your kids in Science. Although the series was filmed in the 1990’s it is one of the most interesting Science video series as it combines humor with Science concepts. You can find this DVD
            series in the library.
